What did No Child Left Behind leave behind?
a message from Superintendent Dr. Curtis Jones
This week, the Griffin High School Fine Arts Academy gave its Christmas performance at the Griffin Auditorium, which was filled with parents, friends, and classmates of the performing students.

Students' participation was the unique feature of this show, where more than 200 students in the Fine Arts Academy performed. They set-up, designed, arranged, and executed the performance. It was amazing to see how the students were able to perform and work behind the scenes. This is due to the leadership of their teachers:
- Greg Dumas (band)
- Kelli Duncan (drama)
- Cristi Johnson (art)
- James Lindsey (chorus)
- Scott Votaw (broadcasting)
This Christmas-themed event was well done, and it was very impressive. It brought to my mind though, the sacrifices that we've had to make for this event to occur.
As No Child Left Behind was implemented, the fine arts were left behind. We have placed students in more support and credit recovery classes, and while this has helped our graduation rate, students have lost opportunities to understand the arts, participate in fine arts classes, and to find their other talents. I believe our fine arts programs should be bigger as not all of our students have been able to fully benefit from our fine arts programs. As we continue to move forward, it is my hope that we will be able to provide more to support our fine arts programs.
On a different note, this is a holiday season, it's Christmas time, and so Merry Christmas to all of you. Talk to you next week.

Spalding High School student to meet with Governor Deal
Spalding High School student Chris Ware was elected Governor at Georgia Boys State this past summer. In that role, he will meet with Georgia Governor Nathan Deal and members of the Georgia the House of Representatives on Wednesday.
Principal Derrell Jeffcoat said, "We are exceptionally proud of Chris and how he represents Spalding High."
Georgia Boys State is a comprehensive one week course in state and local government . It is a "leadership action program" where qualified male high school rising seniors take part in a practical government course. It is designed to develop a working knowledge of the structure of government and to impress upon the citizen the fact that our government is just what we make it. Along the way delegates have the opportunity to learn the political process by organizing a mythical 51st state. Each level of government is run by those delegates who are elected to serve. Instruction is presented on the law and court system, parliamentary procedure and Georgia political history.

As basketball season approached, it was time to decorate the school gym with some spirited posters. However, some of the materials were in short supply. When Ms. Wiehe heard this from her daughter, she didn't hesitate to respond. She sent materials to the school and even offered to help make and hang the posters. Mrs. Wiehe was willing to offer time and resources to make basketball season special, even though her daughter is not involved with the team. Thank you to Ms. Wiehe and all of the volunteers within the Griffin-Spalding County School System. Your support is truly appreciated.
