Dr. Curtis Jones

Welcome Back!

a message from Superintendent Dr. Curtis Jones

You've been missed! I'm looking forward to seeing you next week at the 5th Annual Education Celebration on Wednesday. Many activities have occurred over the summer, and I hope that one of them has been you finding time to rest, relax, and get ready for the new school year.

Let's welcome our new teachers
Earlier this week I had the privilege to meet our new teachers - 54 strong - and they appeared to be an outstanding group. Some are brand new to education. Others are coming to us with many years of experience. But collectively, I think you're going to be happy with our team's new additions.

I ask that we all continue to share with them our school system's values and culture so they can hit the ground running and have a great year.

Southern Crescent Technical College
I was also fortunate this week to attend a ground-breaking ceremony at Southern Crescent Technical College. It was exciting to see our community's support for Southern Crescent as they build a new medical building. This new facility will directly connect with our high school's career paths. Southern Crescent is showing once again what a critical partner they are to us, and I anticipate the addition of that building will help us increase our graduation rate. So, congratulations to Southern Crescent. This is an exciting time for us!

Open House is a beginning.
I know time is short. We've had to implement work schedule adjustment days again, and you lost Monday, August 1, and we will have an abbreviated open house on Thursday, August 4.

I ask you to focus during open house to make this an enjoyable experience for all of our parents and students.

  • For some children, Open House will be the beginning of their educational journey.
  • For others, it will be their first time they see their new school.
  • And finally, some students will be returning to a place where they feel safe and loved.

Open House sets the tone for the school year and for what we will achieve. Our students will achieve a lot this year. How do I know? I know because last year's CRCT, EOCT, and GHSGT results are in. AYP status has been determined. By all measures, we are better this year than we were last year. Everyone can be proud!

Test scores don't tell everything, but they say a lot. The hard work, dedication, and focus you put in last year paid off. On behalf of our board of education and the citizens of our community, I say, "Thank you, thank you, thank you."

And I'll see you next week!

August 4 Open House, 3pm -7pm, offers many opportunities for parents, students

OPEN HOUSE
The Griffin-Spalding County School System Open House for students and parents in all schools has been scheduled for Thursday, August 4, 3pm to 7pm. Students and their families will have the opportunity to meet teachers and administrators and to see their school. School bus routes and school attendance zones will be posted during Open House.

Complete the Parent Questionnaire

Those parents attending Open House can respond to the school system's online Parent Questionnaire in a computer lab. Parents wishing to respond before open house may do so here. The questionnaire is designed to help schools better serve parent needs.

View Student Information and Grades Online

During open house, parents may review their student's information and update their contact phone numbers on the student information system, Infinite Campus. Parents can also create an account on Infinite Campus so that they can view their student's grades online.

Register for the Elementary After School Program

Registration for the Elementary After-School Program begins during Open House on Thursday, August 4, in elementary schools that have after-school programs.

See you on the 1st Day of School

The first day of school for the 2011-2012 school year is Monday, August 8. Important back-to-school information can be found on the school system's website, www.spalding.k12.ga.us.

Calendars with important dates were mailed to parents on Friday, July 22. "We are trying to meet parents' needs with one-stop shopping during open house," said Anna Burns. For example, if parents missed the phone call in April that announced schools were closed after the tornado, they can correct their contact information in the Parent Portal of Infinite Campus during Open House. This is the time to prepare for the first day of school on August 8."
