August 4 Open House, 3pm -7pm, offers many opportunities for parents, students

OPEN HOUSE

The Griffin-Spalding County School System Open House for students and parents in all schools has been scheduled for Thursday, August 4, 3pm to 7pm. Students and their families will have the opportunity to meet teachers and administrators and to see their school. School bus routes and school attendance zones will be posted during Open House.

Complete the Parent Questionnaire
Those parents attending Open House can respond to the school system's online Parent Questionnaire in a computer lab. Parents wishing to respond before open house may do so here . The questionnaire is designed to help schools better serve parent needs.

View Student Information and Grades Online
During open house, parents may review their student's information and update their contact phone numbers on the student information system, Infinite Campus. Parents can also create an account on Infinite Campus so that they can view their student's grades online.

Register for the Elementary After School Program

Registration for the Elementary After-School Program begins during Open House on Thursday, August 4, in elementary schools that have after-school programs.

See you on the 1st Day of School

The first day of school for the 2011-2012 school year is Monday, August 8. Important back-to-school information can be found on the school system's website,

www.spalding.k12.ga.us

Calendars with important dates were mailed to parents on Friday, July 22. "We are trying to meet parents' needs with one-stop shopping during open house," said Anna Burns. For example, if parents missed the phone call in April that announced schools were closed after the tornado, they can correct their contact information in the Parent Portal of Infinite Campus during Open House. This is the time to prepare for the first day of school on August 8."

Georgia Students Show Improvement on End-of-Course Tests

From the Georgia Department of Education

July 20, 2011 - The results of the Spring 2011 Georgia End of Course Tests (EOCT) show student improvement in seven of eight tests. In comparing the results to Spring 2010, students demonstrate significant improvement in Biology, Physical Science, and U.S. History.  EOCT scores also improved for Ninth Grade Literature, American Literature, and Economics.

The percentage of students who met or exceeded the standards for Physical Science (76%) improved four percentage points over last year.  Likewise, scores for Biology (70%) and U.S. History (66%) also improved by four points.

In April 2011, the State Board of Education approved a plan to phase out the Georgia High School Graduation Test, beginning with students who enter ninth grade for the first time in the 2011-2012 school year.  Starting with these students, the EOCT will count as 20% of the final grade, an increase from the previous 15% level.
