You know you are doing the right things when...
A message from Superintendent Dr. Curtis Jones
a perfect stranger comes into superintendent's office and says, "I have something I want to show you." She handed me a 1-page document titled, "Restaurant Review," and explained that her club members had seen students in J. Henry's, and then saw an article about their experience they had written. Her hand-written note at the top says, "Dale and I thought this was the sweetest article. Thank goodness for teachers like this!"
I agree! It's another example of how what we do matters to students that need us most - and our community is recognizing it. Thank you, Heidi!

You know you're doing the right thing when...
over 100 people turn out for the "Enjoy Life" employee wellness program that started this week. I went to a P90x class with Amanda Franklin and had a great time (and did a lot of sweating!). I saw people enjoying themselves everyday as they began the process of changing their lifestyles for the better. I invite you to join in, no matter where you are! It's a great idea, and we are doing the right thing for ourselves and our co-workers.
And you know you're doing the right thing when...
you get a phone call from the coach of the Griffin High School rifle team and he says, "Come join us! We're going to take a picture and celebrate the Georgia High School Association Championship for Riflery. Sergeant Major Lang has been with Griffin High School since the mid-90s. The program has had success, but none like this. It was good to see the hard work of the coach and all of the team members pay off by winning a state championship. Congratulations!

And finally, you know you're doing the right thing when ...
you announce that because of the weather, the CRCT will not start Tuesday. Students initially cheered, but then expressed sadness because they were ready. Pep rallies had been held across the county in preparation. I saw a lot of motivation at Moore Elementary when I visited with them right after their pep rally. I've heard many stories about others.
So, congratulations to all, Dare to do Better, and enjoy your weekend.

Interested in getting your reading endorsement?
How about achieving the reading endorsement AND a master's degree in reading education?
UGA has just announced a new online program!
A message from Valerie Mercer, Director of Teacher Quality
In partnership with the University of Georgia, the system will pay for the three courses that count toward your reading endorsement as part of this degree program.
You must meet all of the requirements of the endorsement agreement that you sign with the system, and you must maintain employment with the system throughout the endorsement series.
The system pays for three courses through Title I/Title IIA funds, then you will apply as a degree student and you'll only have to fund nine more courses toward a master's degree in reading education.
It's a great opportunity to earn a degree from UGA and it is completely online!
Griffin-Spalding County School System will pay for the three courses toward your reading endorsement as part of your degree program and the system pays for all books and materials associated with those three courses, but you must pay the application fee to get into UGA.
You must also fulfill UGA's admission requirements. See link below.
Interested? Got questions about achieving the reading endorsement funded through Griffin-Spalding's Title IIA funds? Please send an email to valerie.mercer@gscs.org

Employee of the Month
High Schools |
A. Z. Kelsey Academy
Nutrition Staff
Sandy Phillips, Mary Ringer, Sabrina Ledford, Becky Sherman and Everlena Jackson provide the best meals in the school system for our students. Each lady encourages our students to do their very best each and every day, as well as give them a cheerful smile and welcome when they come to school. Great group of ladies indeed.
Griffin High School
Tamara McCann For an outstanding job with our students in the Read 180 program. She also tutors students after school and is always willing to assist where needed. Ms. McCann recently worked with students in our targeted flexible grouping pull-outs for GHSGT/EOCT preparation. In addition, she has worked tirelessly with students, teachers, parents, and vendors in coordinating our Junior/Senior prom.

Col. Rod Sylvester
***
Nominated by Special Education Teacher Beth Chafin
***
She wrote: "Col. Sylvester noticed that one of my students frequently wore a Georgia Tech shirt and jacket. When he found out that my student and his family were big Tech fans, Col. Sylvester took it upon himself to contact Georgia Tech Athletic Department to get my student a personalized and autographed picture of Coach Paul Johnson, the head coach of the Yellow Jackets football team. When I thanked Col. Sylvester and told him how excited my student and his family were to receive the photo, Col. Sylvester reacted very modestly stating 'That's just what we do for the kids.' This was a small act in Col. Sylvester's eyes, but it was huge to my student, his family, and me."

Joet Williams
for outstanding assistance with the CRCT administration
Mainstay Academy
Craig Whedon
He has worked diligently all year with the 6 school systems that transport students to Mainstay Academy's Griffin site to coordinate testing including CRCT, CRCTM, EOCT, GHSGT, and all writing tests. It may sound like just another testing coordinator job, but when systems' testing windows are different, systems' spring breaks conflict with the CRCT testing window (which involves working with transportation and families to ensure students come to school while their peers are on spring break), and Mainstay Academy students come and go so quickly, it is NO EASY TASK. He has done an excellent job in picking up answer documents from the 6 systems, providing all teachers with required training, ensuring that the wide variety of individualized testing accommodations are communicated and adhered to, scheduling the testing sessions with the best interest of each student in mind, ensuring test security and encouraging students and teachers throughout; and he has done all of this with flexibility, a positive attitude and a collaborative focus. THANK YOU CRAIG!!!!
