News Year's Resolutions
a message from Superintendent Dr. Curtis Jones

CJ at AZKA GraduationThree days ago, my wife and I were shopping for Christmas presents. I dropped her off at the front door of the store, and I went to park the car. As I entered the store to find her, I saw a familiar figure out of the corner of my eye.

 "Col. Jones!"

I smiled. He was one of my former JROTC students from Griffin High. He was with his wife and baby girl.  As I extended my right hand he said, "I don't want a handshake, I want a hug." I had "that feeling" - the one of the joy of seeing one of my successful students.

Most of you have had that experience. Former students remind us why we're here and why we do this. But, this time was particularly good for me because of difficulties we've recently gone through, and it happened during this most wonderful time of the year.

As I reflect on this first semester...
there have been many good times and successes. When I look at CRCT and EOCT benchmarks, I see our strategies are working. It appears everything is moving in a positive direction. That's because of you, your hard work, and our students' hard work as they follow your lead.

I also know we've had some difficult times. I will reflect on those this holiday break. In all of this, there is learning for us. Even though we're adults, we're life-long learners. Sometimes learning doesn't come from the classroom but from life.

I hope you've had some experiences this semester you can reflect on to help you become a better person and educator.

Determining my resolutions
Like many of you, I have some New Year's resolutions for 2011.

My first resolution will be to lose weight. This one seems to come around every year, but once again I will focus on it.

My second resolution will be to continue to place a high priority on my family and my loved ones.

And my third resolution will be to remain true to the Griffin-Spalding County School System. GSCS is a good organization filled with good people trying to do what's best. Because of you, our students and community are educated.

I commit myself to do the very best I can. I will do what's right - not what's popular or easy.  I will do what's right based on my analysis and thought process. Sometimes doing what's right is harder, but then I can sleep at night.

My Christmas wish for you
I hope you enjoy your family and loved ones over the holidays. I hope you make great resolutions and that you are successful in keeping them. Finally, I hope you come back ready to finish the second semester as well as you completed this first semester.

I respect you, and I look forward to seeing you in 2011. I hope to see many of you on Growth Opportunity Day January 4th.

My last resolution for all of us is...
to Continue to Dare to do Better!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

--Curtis

Vaya Con Dios!
a message from Mrs. Fannie Delaney, out-going Board of Education Chair

Fannie DelaneyThese are two small words, but they are the most profound...
Thank you.

Thank you for allowing me to be your board of education chair for the last two years and a board member for the last ten.

My life in education has been the most rewarding experience I could ever hope for... from the day I first entered the classroom as a teacher to the day I adjourned my last board meeting as chair. I've seen our school system's operations on many levels. Looking back, I'm amazed at the scope of which I've been a part.

We've shared many wonderful, happy moments. However with responsibility comes turmoil. I've been part of many unpopular decisions. I believe the board has made the right decisions, morally and ethically, even when it didn't seem that way. We kept the children first and put the community next.

I've visited every school many times. I've seen great changes over the years, from GPS to Standards to Activboards. I've seen students with disabilities become productive citizens because of you! You are caring, compassionate, and qualified. I can't thank you enough.

I am most proud that we have a place for all students. We've opened A. Z. Kelsey Academy. We now have the Taylor Street Achievement Center. There are even virtual classes available!

What's my advice to you? Keep doing the right thing!

Let me cite some quick examples:
  • Futral Road Elementary is a National Blue Ribbon School.
  • Orrs Elementary is a National School of Character.
  • And I'm so proud of Griffin High School for receiving its school improvement grant. I'm looking forward to watching great things unfold there for the next three years!

You've dared to do better, and I commend you. And, until later...('cause I don't believe in goodbye)...

Vaya Con Dios!
