"911. What's your emergency?"
a message from Superintendent Dr. Curtis Jones, Jr.

When these calls occur, everyone has a part.

By now you've heard of the death of Michael Hollis, a Griffin High School student who died a week ago during the school day. Michael, a member of the GHS student body, was in the marching band as well as the drum line. His death is sad and affects many within our community. Our hearts and our thoughts are with his family.

As this week has progressed I've been asked, "How did the school system know what to do? How did it know how to respond?"

It's a good question, and it's one that we actually discussed during an after-action review to look at what we did, when we did it, and to determine if there were ways of doing things better. As always, there is room for improvement.

But the direct answer to "How did we know what to do?" is fairly simple. We have an emergency action plan, and within it there is a contingency for this type of situation.

The plan calls for the school district's crisis response team to be notified, to go into action, and then to deploy to various locations. Members of this team went to Orrs Elementary, Spalding Regional Medical Center, as well as Griffin High to help handle the situation as it developed. The plan even includes how to interact with the media.

Reflecting back, it is a good plan, and this particular contingency was implemented effectively.

The reason I share this with you is because we never know when we will be part of the plan. In their classrooms, teachers have an extract from the emergency operations plan. It's a little thin book called the "Emergency/Crisis Quick Reference Guide," and it explains the different roles that you can play as well as the actions are you expected to take.

Please take time to look at it and to understand it. If you have questions, talk with your principal. It's said in sports that you play like you practice. This past week has reminded me that we have a good plan. Each of us needs to be fully aware of what's in it and our emergency responsibilities.

So, I close this week's conversation with you by saying please look at the plan. Please remember Michael and his family in your prayers.

Curriculum In The Park
Sponsored by
Atkinson Elementary & Cowan Road Middle Schools

Atkinson Elementary and Cowan Road Middle schools are joining forces to have Curriculum in the Park. The fun and informational event to educate students, parents and the community will be held on Thursday, October 21, from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at Dundee Park.

Aveory Allen, principal of Atkinson Elementary said, "Curriculum in the Park is an innovative way to provide pertinent information regarding programs offered to parents and students throughout the school year. We will provide information concerning parent meetings, information sessions, class offerings, volunteering and special events. Parents will be given the opportunity to meet with teachers and have mini parent conferences concerning their child. We will provide hot dogs, drinks, and snacks for attendees and give away some special prizes."

For more information concerning Curriculum in the Park, please call Atkinson Elementary School at 770-229-3715 or Cowan Road Middle School at 770-229-3722.
G-S teachers in schools not undergoing GAPSS to be surveyed

The highly-regarded Georgia Assessment of Performance on School Standards Analysis (GAPSS) is a strategic diagnostic to determine the strengths and weaknesses of a school as defined by the School Keys, Georgia's standards for schools.
For the first time teachers in schools not undergoing a GAPSS study  in the current school year are being asked to complete a  survey that lays the roadmap for improvement.

Superintendent Dr. Curtis Jones, said, "We have been determining the best way to take the pulse of teachers to obtain data on teacher effectiveness including standards-based classrooms and professional learning communities. We settled on the GAPSS instrument."

Faculty members at Anne Street Elementary , Atkinson Elementary, Cowan Road Elementary,  Crescent Elementary, Futral Road Elementary, Jackson Road  Elementary, Jordan Hill Elementary,  Moreland Road Elementary, Moore Elementary, Orrs Elementary , Cowan Road Middle School, Carver Road Middle School and Griffin High School are being asked to complete the 30 question survey.

Teachers at each of these schools will be emailed directly the link to the survey to complete.
