Expectations from Friday's Front Page
On the front page of Friday's Griffin Daily News was an article about one of our finalists for Teacher of the Year, Ms. Kay Brumbelow. Earlier this week there was an article about Kennedy Road Middle School teacher Steven Posey, another finalist for GSCS Teacher of the Year. I expect that our third finalist Lee Thomas of Spalding High School will also be featured. As you read these articles about our outstanding teachers, it becomes clear that we are recruiting and retaining the right people - people who have dedication, passion, and a love for teaching. I think the public expects no less from us.
Also on the front page of Friday's Griffin Daily was an article about the SAT scores of Griffin High and Spalding High. The article reported the scores at both high schools had declined and were lower than the state and national scores.
With both the SAT and Teacher of the Year articles on the front page on the same day, it becomes clear that our community expects us not only to retain and recruit the right people, it also expects us to produce results. They expect us to help their child, our students, do well.
And so, I have to admit, I do not think the SAT has been a priority of ours. We've focused on CRCTs, graduation tests, math, language arts and reading. But more is expected of us, and now is the time to do better.
I believe that SAT scores are a system average, score, and result. We as a system have to take that on, and we will.
SAT scores are not the total responsibility of each individual high school. Students enter high school with:
-
the experiences they've had in elementary and middle school,
-
the experiences of the courses they've taken and the rigor within those courses, and
-
the levels of expectations we've placed upon them.
So, as we examine this example, let's also look at other indictors which we know exist and that our community expects us to do well. Think about how your practices help obtain the results we are currently achieving - and let's all agree to dare to do better! |

Golf Tournament Chairman Henry Mabbett, V. Smith of Manley Spangler Smith Architects, and Dr. Curtis Jones hold two autographed University of Georgia items sold during the 9th annual golf tournament.
 | Golf tournament raises funds for GSCS classrooms
For the ninth consecutive year the Griffin-Spalding Education Foundation sponsored a golf tournament to raise funds for grants and scholarships to classroom teachers in the Griffin-Spalding County School System.
The tournament, held on Friday, September 17, at the Griffin Country Club, was chaired by Henry Mabbett, a parent with students in the school system and Education Foundation board member.
Anna Burns, Director of School and Community Services for the Griffin-Spalding County School System, said, "We are fortunate to have volunteers and sponsors of the caliber of Henry Mabbett. He and Education Foundation board chair Raymond Ray are leading the Education Foundation to accomplish so much for our students and teachers."
The major sponsor for the tournament was Manley Spangler Smith Architects. Other top tier sponsors included Bickers Consulting Group, Florida Rock and Tank Lines, Control Concepts, H.E. Hodge, and Willett Engineering.
School principals were on hand at 9:00 am tee time to greet sponsors and to show their appreciation for their efforts to help Griffin-Spalding students.
Adding to the excitement of the event was a silent auction of sports memorabilia. Burns said, "The auction has proved popular among our players in the past. This year there were college football game tickets, autographed NASCAR items, and golf collectibles among other items. " |

Reminder -
Give your preference on school calendars for 2011-2013
Beginning September 10 and continuing through September 20, the public can give their opinions of school calendars proposed for 2011-2013 on a survey at www.spalding.k12.ga.us.
Denise Burrell, Deputy Superintendent, said, "The Teaching and Learning Department developed three calendar options for consideration and feedback by our stakeholders. Two calendar proposals have breaks balanced through the school year like the current school calendar. The third proposal is a more traditional school calendar which begins school two weeks later than we currently begin school and has only traditional holiday breaks during the school year.
