The Best of the Best
a message from Denise Burrell
Assistant Superintendent for Instruction
One of the best times of the year for our system is when we announce our Teachers of the Year for our eighteen schools.
Each year when I see the list of teachers, I say the same thing: "I thought last year was as good as it could get, but this year's list is fabulous!"
Once again, this year's Teachers of the Year list is as breathtaking as every year
before.
What an honor it is for a teacher to be chosen by colleagues as the person to represent them as the Teacher of the Year!
It is a validation of a job well-done by those who know that teacher the best - those other teachers in that same school.
Everyday, these colleagues watch these honored teachers' interactions with students, with parents, with community members, and with other teachers. They see traits and qualities that make the Teacher of the Year the best of the best.
Teachers of the Year spend their lives standing strong for the value of public education. They work diligently to educate students who will come back to us as adults and make our community stronger.
Being the Teacher of the Year also brings with it a great deal of responsibility.
-
The teacher becomes a spokesperson for the school and for our system.
-
These are the ones whom everyone is watching, whom everyone is talking about, and who become role models for our newest teachers.
-
They often are our representatives on school councils, for community events, and become mentors for other teachers.
-
And if we are lucky, one of our Teachers of the Year could be the spokesperson for our state.
So, I want to say congratulations. Congratulations to all of our teachers in Griffin-Spalding who accepted the challenge to dare to be better this year and who worked with our most precious commodity-our children.
And I want to especially say congratulations to our eighteen Teachers of the Year. You are each wonderful and special to our system. We as a system, and I especially, are so proud of and for you.
