DBA message from Denise Burrell
Assistant Superintendent for Instruction

This week, I have been able to sit back and reflect on the last 12 months and what we have accomplished during this school year.  When we began, Dr. Jones dared us to all do better. As I look back, I see each of you accepted his challenge.

How do I know that we accepted his challenge?

All I have to do is look at the results of your work.

  • First, our test scores are moving in the right direction - up.  Our scores on the Georgia High School Graduation test and the CRCT in math are some of the best we have had in several years.

  • We implemented so many new programs -Performance Matters, Read 180, Expert 21, System 44, Aleks, guided reading, STEEP and Imagination Station for all elementary students. We also implemented Infinite Campus.  And you all dared to do better by rolling up your sleeves, learning new material, and then using your knowledge in the classroom to help your students achieve even more.

  • You have used differentiated instruction and flexible grouping to meet the needs of each student in your room each and every day.

  • You have used our common assessments as a measure of which students needed more time to master standards.

  • Many of you worked tirelessly before school, after school, during the breaks, and even on Saturdays to give our students the time they needed.

Because of you and your response to do better, we as a system are better.

Nineteen months ago my husband and I became grandparents.  While we have two children, they pale in comparison to our granddaughter Raegan.  We have both been educators our entire lives, but with Raegan's birth we see all things, even school, through different eyes.  We want more for her than we ever wanted for our own children.

As I reflect on what you have each done this year, I continue to know that we have the best staff in the state, and that all children-including my Raegan-are fortunate to have you each touch their lives.  I have no doubt we will lead the state in student achievement.
