This morning as I was driving to work, a school bus was pulled over on the side of the road. I stopped behind the bus, wondering if the bus driver had forgotten to put out the stop sign. When I realized that was not the case (primarily because a student put his arm out the window and waved me around) I drove around to the front of the school bus, and walked up to the door. The bus driver opened the door, and I asked, "What's wrong?"
She said, "Nothing, I'm just a little bit ahead of schedule and people expect us to be right on time."
I said, "Good for you!"
Consistency.
That's something I think parents appreciate not only from bus drivers but from all of us.
Earlier this week, our school board showed consistency and fairness.
Unfortunately, we had some graduating seniors who got involved in a discipline situation. Because of their situation, they lost the opportunity, the privilege, to participate in commencement exercises.
The students and their parents, through the proper process, asked the board of education if our decision could be reconsidered. To their credit, the board looked at not only the individual circumstances but also the potential impact and long-term implications for all of our students. They decided that our decision should be upheld, and the students would not be able to participate in the graduation exercises.
It was a hard decision for the board. It was a situation where you want to change the rules just once. It was situation when your heart goes out to the students and their families, but decisions do have implications, both intended and unintended.
These are two different examples from two different spectrums. Bus drivers and board of education members were working hard to be consistent and fair for our students. And you've been doing that all year, too.
I thank you for providing consistency and fairness to our students and our parents.
And with this being the last message before you go into post-planning and home for the break, I'm going to ask you to be consistent and fair to the very end. Be consistent and fair while doing all of your post-planning duties.
But more than that, be consistent and fair with your summer. Relax. Enjoy yourself. Take a break.
Over the summer continue to check your email or our website for the GSCS COMMUICATOR, which will bring you the latest news.
I know you're still wondering what's going to happen with our school calendar for 2010-2011; you're wondering if we will have the adjusted work calendar days. One of the best ways we can share that information with you, besides the website, is in the COMMUNICATOR.
So please continue to check it, and most of all, enjoy your summer.
We appreciate you greatly. We can't say it enough, but we continue to try. Now go out and relax! I dare you!
