You make us proud
A message from Dr. Curtis Jones

My last few messages have dealt with the budget situation that our school system is facing and the difficult times ahead.

This week, I was able to see the other side.

During my visits to schools, I entered one third grade math classroom and saw a teacher giving instruction to students that was simply amazing.
Students were preparing for the CRCT and the teacher, like many of you, was using best practices.

Students responded to questions, allowing the teacher to identify students who understood the concepts and those who did not. She was able to pair a student with another for peer tutoring.

She asked students to explain the problems in different ways so others could realize the multiple ways to solve a math problem. It truly was an uplifting experience.

I then went to the classroom next door and saw a third grade reading exercise. Students were reading in pairs and were analyzing and discussing cause and effect. I watched young minds develop as they understood and demonstrated their understanding of the concept. The teacher displayed true professionalism.

At another school, students were learning about place values and money. While the students took time to cut out examples of dollar bills and coins, they interacted with one another, building their social skills. What may have seemed like down time was a fun and developmental time for students.

When it was time for students to demonstrate their knowledge on place values, the teacher integrated technology and brought the lesson to life. The students were truly excited about learning.

In all three of these classrooms, students were:
  • Using technology. Interactive boards and class pads made the instruction stimulating and exciting.
  • Talking about the standards they were working on.
  • Talking through the problem-solving process to explain how to get logical answers.

And so, as we finish our run up to the CRCT, I dare you to:
  • look at your students' progress over the past year and celebrate that progress,
  • evaluate each student, and
  • help students prepare during these final weeks of school.

I know you're doing it. I know you're working hard. It shows everyday. You're doing a great job.

Let's finish in a great way. I dare you.

What does that code mean?
Deciphering paycheck and direct deposit stub codes

As we fill out our income tax forms, we often refer to our paycheck or direct deposit stubs for itemized tax deductions.

Every GSCS paycheck or direct deposit stub lists your itemized deductions, such as tax withholdings and social security.

The codes used to describe these deductions can be confusing.

Here is your guide to paycheck deduction codes used by payroll in our finance department.

If you have more deductions on your stub than space allows, your stub will have the code "Overflow DED:". An additional printout, called "Excess Report", will accompany your stub. This report lists the additional codes and financial amounts deducted from your paycheck.
