Another snow day
by Dr. Curtis Jones
On Friday, February 12, we closed for students because of the anticipated winter storm. All of you were asked to come to work and you may wonder why. As we continue to look at the calendar for the rest of the school year, we are preparing to make several reccomendations to our Board of Education. One of those recommendations is that February 12th will be considered a work day. That is why we asked you to come to work. Giving you the opportunity to work in your classrooms on Friday may allow you to make up some of the time from the furlough days on January 4th and 5th. While you may have been disappointed that you had to come to work, I hope you're able to find time to continue your professional learning communities in your schools. Please enjoy yourselves during the break and come back ready to finish the year in a great way. I dare you to do it. |
School system notified of results of 2009 spring CRCT Erasure Analysis Headline
Griffin, Ga. -The Griffin-Spalding County School System has been notified that the analysis of student answers for the spring CRCT in grades 1 through 8 identified a sufficient number of wrong -to-right erasures in some schools to flag certain classrooms.
Schools were placed in categories according to their percentage of flagged classrooms.
Of the 15 elementary and middle schools, 74% or 11 schools were cleared; 2 schools were of minimal concern; none were of moderate concern; and two schools were of severe concern. The "minimal concern" schools are Anne Street Elementary and Moreland Road Elementary. The "severe concern" schools are Atkinson Elementary School and Moore Elementary School. Of our 1200 student tests, 63 were flagged.
The "clear" category means that less than 6% of the given classes were flagged; the "minimal concern" category means that 6-10% of classrooms were flagged; and the "severe concern" category means that 25% or more of classrooms were flagged.
Superintendent Dr. Curtis Jones said, "We are following the recommendations that the Governor's Office of Student Achievement will make to the Georgia Board of Education on Thursday. Our Human Resources Department will conduct an investigation to identify any cause of testing irregularities and follow the other procedures outlined by state agencies. We will submit results of our investigation to the Office of Student Achievement.
"Testing protocols are in place in all our schools including volunteer proctors in the classroom along with the teacher and student test-takers. School testing coordinators are trained to follow testing protocol.
"We will review these procedures, monitor the test environment, and do everything we can to assure the validity of our students' answers."

Griffin-Spalding County School System appeals state Charter School Commission's decision
The Griffin-Spalding County Board of Education and the Henry County Board of Education both appealed the Charter School Commission's decision to grant a charter to Heron Bay Academy to the Georgia Board of Education Charter School Committee at its meeting Wednesday in Atlanta.
The Academy, to be located in Spalding County, is slated to serve both Henry and Spalding County students, primarily the ones who live in the Heron Bay development.
Dr. Curtis L. Jones, Griffin-Spalding County School Superintendent said, " I am disappointed in the action of the Georgia Board of Education Charter School Committee on Wednesday in regard to the Heron Bay Academy charter school. "
Dr. Jones continued, "We believe it is not in the best interest of local taxpaying citizens for the Heron Bay Academy to be operational. The state Charter School Commission experts who reviewed the Heron Bay Charter School proposal recommended against approval to the Georgia Charter Schools Commission. So others apparently agree with us. The Commission however did approve the proposal over the Committee's recommendation not to approve.
"Our Griffin-Spalding County Board of Education has to continue to act in the best interest of our students and the Spalding County taxpayers. We do plan to take further action." |
