Native American History Comes to Life
The First Americans lesson came alive this fall for TCS second graders through their visit to the Orange County History Center and through their TCS special classes. At the History Center, they saw artifacts that were thousands of years old such as a canoe, a Midden exhibit, a Timucuan exhibit, and a Seminole exhibit. A History Center guide explained how these groups used the resources available to survive, and how the arrival of the Spanish changed life for the Timucuans.
Fun and first experiences happened as the children made pies, husked corn, snapped beans, made fry bread, and a rice dish, and prepared their clothing for their Native American feast. Some students had never sliced apples, smelled vanilla, cracked an egg, measured, or felt animal hide. Prior to the feast, the students learned Native American music and dances, made pinch pots, read books and read about the first Thanksgiving in Spanish. Each child created a diorama on a Native American tribe and orally shared the knowledge acquired pertaining to that tribe. Second graders and all involved have fond memories of their First American studies.

Communicating with Children By: Kristi Ryan Guidance Counselor In education, we talk about direct and indirect learning outcomes; learning that is planned and purposeful as well as that which is unintentional. Indirect learning is often welcomed and valuable. Take team sports, for example. The direct objective is to learn or enhance a specific skill set, but the reason many of us encourage our children to participate is for the indirect outcomes of building self confidence and teaching essential lessons of sportsmanship and team work. This educational concept can be applied to communication with our children. We communicate both directly and indirectly with our children daily. What we say can be enhanced by or lost in the presentation. We know what we want to convey and, in our best moments, are very purposeful in selecting our approach. However, what do our children hear when we speak? How do our children internalize the words, the tone, and the nonverbal cues? Stay tuned...we'll dig deeper into the best practices for communicating with our children next week. For now, simply take mental notes of how your child responds when you talk. What reactions surprise you? When are your words met with a smile, with tears or with silence? |
