A Bad Rap for Cholesterol
Part 3 of 3

If you have been following my articles in the previous newsletters, you have seen several key points that are crucial to understand before attempting to reduce unnecessarily high cholesterol levels.

  • Cholesterol is not evil
  • Only 10-15% of your blood cholesterol is related to diet
  • LDLs are essential for every cell in our body
  • HDLs transport Trans and Saturated fats out of our bodies
  • Your liver produces 85-90% of your cholesterol
  • We are born with the ability to be healthy
Before attempting medical treatment with statin drugs. You should first attempt to lower your cholesterol naturally.  This does not mean that a high reading after one blood test is just cause to start this journey. I feel three separate blood test taken 3 months apart is more of a specific indicator of a chronic cholesterol problem versus an acute level spiked by physical, emotional or chemical stress upon the body.

  1. Once you have determined your cholesterol is a chronic problem, here are my primary recommendations for safely lowering and regulating your cholesterol levels:
Get an appropriate amount of exercise. You really need to work up to 45 minutes 5 days per week of serious exercise. There is not a shortcut. Start slow and pick it up as you build strength and endurance.
  2. Reduce your weight/fat accumulation with a plan of eliminating, refined grains and sugars in your daily diet. Lose 10-20 pounds and effect your cholesterol 10-20%.
  3. Eat more raw fruits, vegetables, nuts, garlic, and oatmeal. They are loaded with fiber and nutrients that have been shown to lower cholesterol.
  4. Drink more tea. Both green and black tea have been shown to lower cholesterol. I prefer black tea in the morning, green tea in the afternoon, and a glass of wine or a beer in the evening.
  5. Make sure you're getting plenty of omega 3s. Fish is best, but flax will work for vegans. Supplement if you don't like fish or flax.
  6. Avoid smoking. It has been shown to be directly tied to the liver and overproduction of cholesterol due to the toxins in tobacco smoke.
  7. Keep alcohol to 1-2 drinks.  At 1-2, it is beneficial to cholesterol lowering. (However, drinking and driving is more deadly than a high cholesterol level.)
  8. Address your emotional and mental challenges. Emotional and mental stress can be catastrophic to your health. It causes people to take drugs, smoke and drink excessively, binge eat on sugars and saturated/trans-fats, and stop exercising. This is a recipe for disaster.
I have been asked by many patients about Red Rice Yeast (RRY) as a natural supplement to lower cholesterol. However, RRY is really only a naturally occurring form of the same statin drugs used to lower cholesterol. It's very strong and has the same side effects, but as with most herbs, you really can't control your dosage due to the varying potencies of the herbal sources.

After spending at least 1 year diagnosing your cholesterol problem, you owe yourself at least 1 year of attempting to control it naturally. However, 1 out of every 1000 people with cholesterol problems has what is called Familial Hypercholesterolemia. This is a big word that means see your Medical Doctor. Without medical intervention you may be on a fast road to heart disease.

Reduce Stress with Massage

Massage Therapy Research

There have been hundreds of research papers written on the benefits of massage therapy. Most suggest that the mechanism relates to a reduction in stress hormone levels following a massage. Thus in turn, we feel less pain, we are less depressed and anxious, we have less fatigue, and have falling asleep much easier.

Most people feel they can empower themselves to relax and deal with their stress, but the reality for most people is that they don't really know how, and the kind of stress we experience today is actually very different than it was years ago.

It seems that stress has become a chronic condition and is literally built into the fabric of our society: rush-hour traffic, constant deadlines, sirens and loud noises, constant stimulation, financial and family pressures. Everything seems urgent. I get stressed just writing about it.

Massage not only can relieve aches and pains of common ailments, it can also reduce the load of the pressures on our emotional and mental health.

Acupuncture for HBP

 acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the most effective alternative treatments for lowering high blood pressure. According to the latest research studies, acupuncture lowers high blood pressure by blocking beta-acceptor of sympathetic nerve and by stimulating adrenaline-angiotensin system.

Acupuncture, along with electric stimulation, can also be applied to treat high blood pressure. Acupuncture treatment combined with electric stimulation, known as electro-acupuncture, can effectively lower high blood pressure.

Electro-acupuncture helps by reducing over activity of the heart and thus reduces the requirement for oxygen, which can significantly lower high blood pressure. The acupuncture needles should be applied maximum up to 30 minutes at a time.

Balance in all things is considered the key to good health and long life.
It's your health. Make time!
