Is Chiropractic a Priority

I would like to talk to you today about your health, and some things I have found to be very common in patients ideas about health. After 30 years of serving the community we have treated more than 15,000 individuals to a chiropractic adjustment. Now of course, not every patient has decided on lifetime preventative or wellness care. If they had, we would have to be a whole chain of offices to handle the sheer volume.

This fact doesn't surprise me. It is part of nature to only think, "What is in this for me now?" Unfortunately, this is also why we frequently end up with much bigger problems later in life, whether it is financial, education, relationship, health, or spirituality.

If you are saving for a house, or for your child's college education, it is only different from saving for a car or a trip to Hawaii in terms of size, but the fundamental process is the same. You must make sacrifices now, in order to gain a positive outcome in the end.

Health is no different. A cigarette can give us the immediate "high" from nicotine, we can chase the "high", thinking one more cocktail will make us feel better, or we can pop into In and Out Burger, because "we don't have time to make lunch" or dinner. But it is these choices that affect us for the rest of our lives, especially when they are frequently decided in the wrong direction.

What does all of this have to do with my practice? Well, chiropractic has been around for more than 115 years. When medicine was using leaches, mercury, and arsenic, chiropractic was teaching exercise, nutrition, and overall wellness, or the right direction.

For 115 years this has been our message. We
believe that the power that made the body heals the body. We believe that it is natural to be healthy and at ease. We feel that sometimes life gives us challenges that lead to ailments or dis-ease, or as medicine calls it, disease.

It is our path as chiropractors, is to find and eliminate or reduce this challenge to our patients. Whether it is a physical, emotional or chemical challenge, they can all cause dis-ease and must be addressed for true health. However, if you wait until the ailment causes impairment or suffering, the mountain sometimes may be too difficult to climb.

Research done by Blue Cross/Blue Shield recently showed that in a sample population of more than 1 million patients, those that were receiving chiropractic care had 50% less surgeries, and 25% less medications prescribed. For those of you that still live in the world of, "I believe" or "I don't believe" in chiropractic. It is time to pull your head out of the sand and look around.

Chiropractic works! It has for 115 years. If you want to save on healthcare, not to be confused with insurance (disease care), then invest in yourself. Invest in chiropractic.

You don't wait until your teeth hurt before brushing them. When was the last time you and your family were seen by your chiropractor?

A Bad Rap for Cholesterol

Most people are acutely aware that cholesterol, especially when very high, can be a bad thing for the body. However, cholesterol is essential to the survival of the human body. This makes maintaining appropriate levels more of a balancing act than just limiting intake of high cholesterol foods.

In fact only 10-15% of cholesterol that circulates in our arteries is actually from our diet, and quite frankly, this cholesterol is just on its way to the liver. By the way, the liver happens to be the organ most responsible for the production of the other 85% of your blood cholesterol.

You see, the liver has the job of keeping an eye on your blood, and making sure that it doesn't become over accumulated with toxins. Trans-fats and saturated fats are toxic to the body in large quantities, causing inflammation not only in the arterial walls, but in the rest of the body as well.

Cholesterol, in the form of HDL or high density lipoprotein, transports those fats out of our bodies. The LDL or low density lipoprotein is what the cell walls of every cell, tissue and organ are made from. Without it we would die, but in excess quantities your body will try to store it for later in the closest, most readily accessible area to the blood stream, the arterial wall.

This process was necessary when we were hunters and gatherers, due to the infrequency of animal fats in our diets. By doing this, the body is able to easily mobilize cholesterol to areas of cellular injury or death to help the body heal.

However, with agricultural advances and access to plentiful supplies of these foods from modern grocery stores, our bodies are confused by the quantities of saturated fats consumed and our livers work overtime to try to store the excess fats and cholesterols. This can lead to over-accumulation in the arterial walls and can result in inflammation and damage to the artery, or cause plaque. This is atherosclerosis, and this is what causes or contributes to most heart attacks.

More on the benefits of cholesterol next time in part 2 of this series.
Comparing
Therapeutic Massage to
Relaxation Massage

  Massage

A relaxation massage is a softer approach to your tight, tense muscles. A session may last up to 1-2 hours using classic low force techniques. The massage therapist will use light to medium pressure, depending on the client's preference, and the intent of the session is to help the client relax and reduce the stress that can be overflowing into the physical part of the body from the mind. Falling asleep during this type of massage is common, and conversation, other than what has been contributing to your stress, should be kept to a minimum. That way you can truly enjoy the relaxing experience.

Therapeutic massage sessions are quite different from a relaxing massage. Even though this type of session may retain a large relaxation element to it, advanced techniques are used for pain and chronic health issues. Advanced techniques such as deep tissue, myofascial release, massage and trigger point therapy are very common in this type of massage. A therapeutic or clinical massage will be scheduled very frequently for the first few weeks or months, depending on the condition and the response to care. This might include ½ hour massages three times a week, or weekly 1 hour massages for a couple of months.

At Westborough Wellness, we offer both types of massage. Consult with the doctor and the therapist to find out which is most appropriate for you.

Acupuncture for Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus is probably the single most important metabolic disease and is widely recognized as one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. It has been out of control in the U.S., with current estimates are that over 7.8% of the adult population has the disease, 92% of them with the type 2 diabetes mellitus (NIDDM: non-insulin-dependent) with 600,000 new cases diagnosed each year. It usually appears around the age of 50 or later, though it can occur during teen years in some cases of obesity.

Diabetes is characterised by three well-known syndromes, polydipsia (excessive thirst), polyphagia (excessive hunger) and polyuria (excessive urination). Diabetes often goes undiagnosed because many of its symptoms seem so harmless. Over time diabetes are accompanied by many severe complications, such as blindness, renal failure, lower-limb amputations, cardiovascular disease and stroke. Recent studies indicate that the early detection of diabetes symptoms and treatment can decrease the chance of developing the complications of diabetes.

Acupuncture treatment for diabetes is most effective for those individuals who have had diabetes for only a few years, and have a milder disease manifestation. Diabetic acupuncture is also most effective in treating diabetes in younger individuals. The herb formulas that had been shown to have hypoglycemic effects in the animal studies. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) often conducted in conjunction with acupuncture, and based on several different principles and herbs, the treatment has been effective for diabetes sufferers in many instances.
