| EPI - No: A gentle start to life
|
The Women's Wellness Centre is delighted to be able to supply for direct purchase (previously only available online in the UK) the popular Epi-No birthing trainer.
It is becoming increasingly commonplace nowadays for midwives and antenatal teachers to recommend the practice of perineal massage to pregnant mothers, the Epi-No is specifically designed to complement this perineal massage.
By gently inserting the small silicon inflatable device into the vagina and gradually increasing the level of inflation, the Epi-no facilitates this massage and provides a controlled, uniformed and gradual progressive perineal stretch. This will help reduce the risk of perineal trauma such as grazing and tearing or the need for an episiotomy. The Epi-No should be used daily from around 37 weeks to get the best results and as an added bonus can be used after the birth to regenerate the strength and tone of the pelvic floor muscles.
For further information regarding this brilliant and innovative birthing trainer, click here.

Tips on Nutrition During Pregnancy
|
A good diet during your pregnancy can help you stay fit, and maintain your energy levels as you prepare for birth.
Here are some simple tips to ensure you have optimum nutrition for you and your growing baby:
- Have a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, especially citrus fruits and dark green vegetables, which contain folic acid
- Fruit and vegetables and wholegrain products will also help keep your bowels healthy and prevent constipation
- Base your meals on carbohydrates to provide you with energy and important B vitamins
- Every day make sure you include some milk and other dairy products to meet your daily calcium needs
- Include sources of protein daily in your diet, which has high levels of essential fatty acids or eggs and pulses which are a good source of iron
- A healthy weight gain, of about 12.5kg during pregnancy, is associated with a lower risk of complications.
- Watch what you snack on, to help prevent putting on too much weight

Can complementary therapies be of benefit in pregnancy?
|
The number of clients now choosing to include complementary therapies as part of their antenatal care and preparation for birth appears to be on the increase and as more health professionals become involved and aware of their potential and effects, their integration and place alongside mainstream medicine looks set to continue.
Complementary therapies which are favoured in pregnancy include acupuncture, aromatherapy, massage, reflexology, osteopathy and yoga but what are these therapies; what benefits can be expected and what assurances can you have that a therapy is safe or advisable and provided by a reputable practitioner?
