  August, 2010
Greetings!

Welcome to the August issue of Freeman's E-Newsletter!

We are still in the midst of an image overhaul of our sites. Miapoxy is done and the first two sections of our main site are nearly complete.

Our next series of videos is still in pre-production. As always, you'll hear about all new video releases through our newsletter first. Stay tuned.

New Urethane Two-Pound Kits
uni-cloth
closeout 1
We are now offering three more of our Freeman-branded urethanes in convenient two-pound kits:

Freeman 1080 - this bright white resin (pictured) is harder and slower than 1070 or 1085.

Freeman 1090 - this is our very popular clear resin. Like all clear products (urethane, epoxy, or silicone) you have to be more careful as they are less forgiving, especially if you want bubble-free castings. But if you follow our videos on preparing liquid tooling materials, you'll get great results.

Freeman 1035 - this is a beige colored, flexible material that is excellent for making molds with deep undercuts or where a flexible mold makes demolding easier.
More Safety Materials
closeout 1 This is one area that we can't stress enough. This is why we have expanded this area of our Miapoxy website to include:

Tyvek sleeves - 18" long sleeves to protect workers' arms from resin contact.

3M Particulate Respirators (Masks) - Excellent to wear when operating sanders and other dust creating equipment.

And for a wider selection of materials, check out the Safety Section of our main website.

Tech-Line Q & A
Tech LibraryIn every issue, we bring you the answers to real-world technical questions that have broad applications. Our technical support staff is available during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, by calling 800-321-8511 (Option 5)

What mold material can I used to cast wax figures?  The mold needs to handle a minimum of 200°F.

Our Bluestar V-330 Silicone can handle temperatures up to 400°F, and would be suitable for this application.

Why is it difficult to remove the lid from my urethane resin after closing from previous use?

The ISO (resin) side of the material will react when in contact with air.  If any resin has cured on the lip of the can, it will create a bond, making it very difficult to remove the lid.  To properly reseal a can, start by thoroughly cleaning the lip with a rag or paper towel to remove all residue. Next, take a small bristle brush and brush Vasoline on the inside of the lip of the can or on a screw cap (whichever you are using).  Finally, spray a burst of Freeman 302 Urethane Protectant  and close lid.  Repeat after each use.

I am making carbon fiber parts using a fiberglass mold with a black tooling gel coat. The parts are made with an epoxy resin system. I would like to move to your semi-permanent mold release. I would like the version that provides the best finish without painting. What do I need for cleaner, primer, mold release, and release spray to do this?

You will want to clean your surface using the Chemlease Cleaner EZ to remove any waxes or contaminants from the tool surface.  Next you will want to apply two coats of the Chemlease 15 Sealer.  Apply the first coat with a clean saturated cotton cloth.  When the edges begin to evaporate, wipe the surface with a clean dry cotton cloth. Wait 15 minutes.  Apply second coat. Wait 60 minutes. Apply four to five coats of Chemlease PMR EZ Release Agent, waiting 15 minutes between each application.  You will want to wait 30 minutes after final coat.

Which RenShape Board would work best for Metalforming Tools?

We would suggest going with  Ren Shape 5166. To match a RenShape board with any application, refer to the Applications Guide in our catalog (the second page of our Machinable Media section).

Do you need a release agent on sheet wax?

Unlike machinable wax, our sheet wax is not self-releasing.  You will want to paint the sheet wax with our Freeman Wood & Plaster Sealer, and then use the Freeman Wax Release and PVA as your release agents.
