Greetings!
Welcome to the May issue of Freeman's E-Newsletter!
We have just released our first new video in a while. And the next one on complex parting lines is just about ready. Also, our fiberglass and carbon reinforcement 'renovation' is still underway. Details below.
Finally, if you happen to
be in the Seattle area during the May 18-20 SAMPE show this year, stop by Booth #1319 and say
hello.

ipod icon | Casting Molds & Models With Intricate Detail
The more detailed your patterns, the
more difficult it is to cast void-free molds and parts. Here we show
you a few tricks to get consistently better results when working with
highly detailed castings.
This video was actually shot a couple of years ago and was intended as a HobbyCast video. But it was never completed because we got sidetracked with our new Canadian venture and it took a while to figure out what to do with our HobbyCast website (as most of you know, it is now integrated into Miapoxy.com).

Reinforcement Renovation, Part II
|
|
fiberglass | We are continuing our work on expanding our glass and carbon reinforcements. Our almost-complete line is now up (and in stock) except a 3 oz (style 120) cloth which is still on its way.
Next up, some updated images (please pardon the temporary image) and then a comprehensive selection guide for all reinforcements. Stay tuned. In the meantime, check out our special on 1800 style cloth (see bottom of this email).

What is the use of aluminum fillers in plastic tooling?
Aluminum fillers are generally used with epoxy casting resins to lower their exotherm, reduce shrinkage, and enable these resins to be cast in thicker sections. Generally, smaller particle sizes are for smaller jobs, and larger fillers for larger jobs · POWDER = Consistency of powder · SAND = Consistency of beach sand · GRAIN = Consistency of rice · SPHERE = Size of bb's · PUFFS = Size of pebbles Although adding fillers to epoxies have advantages, they also thicken the viscosity causing greater air entrapment. Because of this, they are generally used as backup materials only, underneath an epoxy surface coat to provide a hard, defect-free mold. What flexible mold material do you have that can handle temperatures up to 350-400°F?
What is a good material for a fast yet durable repair to an aluminum mold or part?
Freeman Tuf-fil Aluminum is an excellent repair material for aluminum. It has a paste consistency for easy application and provides a durable long lasting repair. It is inexpensive, solidifies in 15 minutes, can be sanded or machined to the contour of the part. We need a machinable media material that is suitable for hand carving (wood carving tools) and durable enough for use as a sand casting pattern.
Although almost any lower density board is carvable with wood carving tools, we would recommend RenShape 450 because it can be used in a low volume sand casting application (if you are looking for only 1-2 castings). The sand will be too aggressive with the lower density boards.
We incorrectly mixed our casting resin and left us with a gooey mess. How can we clean our silicone molds without ruining them?
We would suggest using acetone. However, the acetone may attack the silicone if it sits on the silicone mold for a long length of time. After cleaning the mold with the acetone, wash down the mold with soap and water to clean off the acetone and any remaining residue.
