  April, 2010
Greetings!

Welcome to the April issue of Freeman's E-Newsletter!

If you happen to be in the Seattle area during the May 18-20 SAMPE show this year, stop by Booth #1319 and say hello.

As stated last month, we have been working on a number of  enhancements to our websites. Our iPod/iPhone/Smartphone video formats are ready and our fiberglass renovation is about 1/2 complete. For more details, read on...

Reinforcement Renovation, Part I

fiberglass
fiberglass
In our tireless ongoing process of improving our web presence, our latest project is to give our fiberglass and carbon fiber sections a major facelift, (actually, a complete renovation is more like it). We're about halfway there. We should be in full swing next month.

We are expanding our offering to include 3 oz, 4 oz, 6 oz, 7 oz, 8.5 oz, and more. As soon as we get them in stock, we will get them online.

We have substantially increased the amount of information about each style and weave. You'll know exactly what you are getting.

And finally, we are doing our research on what other websites are offering (and what they aren't). We will be very competitive.

You can take a sneak peak here, or check back with us next month. In the meantime, check out our special below on 1800 style cloth.

What is the likely cause of my silicone rubber failing to cure?

There can be multiple sources that inhibit the curing of silicone rubber.  The most common reasons for cure failure include improper mix ratio, incompatibility with the surface material that it is coming in contact with, and airborne contaminants.

If the material fails to cure completely, it is likely that there has been a mixing error, or an airborne contaminant is inhibiting proper curing.  Make sure you are mixing the silicone at the proper mix ratio (10:1 by weight).  Adding additional catalyst will not accelerate the cure time of silicone.  This will simply make the final product cure to a softer durometer, or not at all.  Use the PT Accelerator to accelerate the cure of platinum systems.  Use the Vicure #2 catalyst to accelerate the cure of condensation systems.

If only part of the silicone fails to cure, such as the face or critical surface, yet the rest of the silicone reaches the proper hardness, you can most likely attribute this to a compatibility issue.  Make sure the silicone you are using is compatible with the substrate it is coming in contact with.  Some common causes of inhibition in our addition cure materials include contact with latex or nitrile gloves, untreated woods, double sided tapes, one part sealants or RTV's, sulfur based clays, and some polyurethanes, and polyester-based materials.

What mold material should I use when casting Urethane Foam?

Urethane Foam tends to be very aggressive.  We would suggest using a silicone rubber for your mold material.

What can I use to clean off the wax release from my aluminum mold and from my casting?

We would suggest using Acetone with a rag or light abrasive pad. Excess buildup may require some scraping or light sanding.

I'm looking for an Epoxy that I can use to adhere aluminum to aluminum.

We would suggest Freeman 505 Fast Set or an Araldite Epoxy Adhesive depending on how demanding the application is.
