Happy 4th!

p.s. Check out the new SnApS Galleries. In June I was in the grass with Potter pups at the Heart & Sole Walk and on the pin boat at starting line of the J-Class Regatta.  Based on requests for these photos, I've just set-up a Zenfolio site where you may order prints if you wish!

Elvis Costello The main musical event for July is the Newport Folk Festival from 7/29-31 highlighted by headliner Elvis Costello closing the show on Sunday. There is something for everyone this year with acts as diverse as EmmyLou Harris, Amos Lee, the Decemberists, Mavis Staples and Ramblin' Jack Elliott.  Appearing at the Narrows Center for the Arts this month is the amazing ukulele player (that's right ukulele) Jake Shimabukuro on 7/9, Marc Cohn on 7/18 and John Gorka on 7/30. The Sunset Music Series at the Newport Yachting Center features Bela Fleck & the Flecktones on 7/9, the Robert Cray Band on 7/22 and many more. Hmmmm... Bela or Jake on 7/9? -- tough call!

Waving FlagJoin the Rhode Island Sons of the Revolution, Newport Historical Society, Washington Square Roots, the Newport Artillery Company and many others for a community celebration of the National Holiday on Washington Square on 7/4 from 10am-4pm. Festivities include the reading of the Declaration of Independence, a Revolutionary-style cannon salute, music, pie-eating, bell-ringing and the opening of the exhibit "The Many Faces of George Washington." A small exhibit on "How Newport Celebrates the 4th" will also be on display in the Colony House. Special this year, the Colony House will host an historic re-enactment of the Trumbull painting of the signing of the Declaration Independence, with the signers portrayed by their descendants and current civic leaders.

Gleam The Robert H. Tiedemann Classic Yachting Weekend on 7/2-3 will be highlighted by the triumphant return of Amorita to Newport Harbor. And, in addition to Captain Bob, we'll be remembering Don Glassie, who passed last winter. Don, a powerful force in the yacht racing world,  brought classic boating "to the people" with his beautiful fleet including Madeline, Rum Runner and Arabella. Next weekend 7/9-10 is one the largest sailing events of the season. The Newport Regatta regularly attracts upwards of 200 racing sailboats on multiple circles throughout the Bay. Two other fun water-related events include a Duck Race at Third Beach to benefit the Middletown Education Collaborative and Surf Fest with Sid Abruzzi at Rough Point After Dark on 7/21. Last but not least, the Cafe Zelda / IYAC Newport Cup will be sailed on 7/2, whether you sail or not, be sure to stop in at the two best Sailor's Bars in town.

Kite Festival The Newport Kite Festival creates a swirling, spinning and diving kaledisope of color at Brenton Point on 7/9-10. On 7/16 you can hit the Arts & Crafts Fair at Touro Park, then head over to Tiverton Four Corners for the 24th Annual Arts & Artisans Fair. On the weekend of 7/30  repeat the road trip with the Cultural Survival Bazaar at Tiverton Four Corners and the Saint John's Summer Fair on the Point. newportFILM has two free outdoor screenings this month, the first "Life In A Day" will be shown at Queen Anne Square at sundown on 7/7, the second, "Buck" will screen at the Polo Grounds in Portsmouth on 7/14 . A mini-festival weekend including newportFILM Kids is planned for 7/22-23.
