lemonade... good news from newport
february 2011
|
Okay, so 2011 might not have gotten off to the best start... we didn't land the America's Cup finals. But talk about making lemonade... thanks to the hard work, dedication and vision of Sail Newport, the RI State Yachting Committee and others Newport will soon have an upgraded yachting venue at Fort Adams enabling us to attract more world-class sailing events to our City-by-the-Sea.
The summer of 2011 is already shaping up to be a terrific sailing season. In additional to all of our annual sailing events, Newport is slated to host a J-Class Regatta in June and an America's Cup World Series event in September (details below in blue view). Both of these events promise land-based spectator opportunities, bringing more public access to our often elusive and exclusive sport. So, let's really make an effort to be exemplary hosts by welcoming these events, including the teams, organizers, supporters and visitors with open arms to show the world that Newport is still the sailing capital of the U.S.!

These will really be something to see -- mark your calendars now! July will also mark the return of the biannual Robert H. Tiedemann Classic Yacht Regatta, more details to come in the months ahead. Show the beach some love on 2/14 at the Clean Ocean Access Coastal Clean-up on Second Beach from 12N-2pm, sturdy shoes and gloves are recommended.

paws for thought
The Potter League's Annual Have A Heart Cocktail Party and Silent Auction Fundraiser will be held on 2/11 at the Hotel Viking. At press time, their website showed 18 cats available for adoption. Maybe you will consider taking one home for Valentine's Day? They make excellent friends and cozy bed-warmers on cold winter nights!
