NNH Receives $10,000 grant from Northwestern Mutual Financial Network

Northside Neighborhood House received  a $10,000 grant from the Northwestern Mutual Foundation in recognition of financial representative Paul W. Fitzgerald, CLU, ChFC's outstanding volunteer involvement as part of the company's 16th annual national Community Service Award program.  A Signal Mountain resident, Fitzgerald is managing director of  Northwestern Mutual Financial Network - Chattanooga.

Paul Fitzgerald presented the $10,000 check to members of the Northside Neighborhood House's Children's Program,  Ex-Officio Board Members and Executive Director, Rachel Gammon, on Thursday, July 15, 2010 during an ice-cream social with financial representatives from the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network office.

"What I truly admire about Northside Neighborhood House is their mission to provide a hand up, not a hand out," said Fitzgerald. "With this generous gift from Northwestern Mutual, we will be able to provide much-needed counseling services to clients as they transition to self-sufficiency and a better life for their families."

"Paul has provided excellent leadership to our Board of Directors and now remains actively involved by serving as a member of our Ex-Officio committee," said Gammon.  "Apart from serving in these capacities, Paul also remains committed to taking a hands-on approach to our motto 'a hand up, not a hand out'.  For two consecutive years the Northwestern Mutual team has taught financial literacy to our children during the summer program.  We are so grateful for the company's commitment to community service."

Fitzgerald is one of 25 financial representatives being recognized as top volunteers.  Through the program funded by the Northwestern Mutual Foundation, more than $275,000 will be donated this year to various nonprofit organizations nationwide.

Save the Date

You won't want to miss the NNH Fall Event, Taste of Northshore and Sample of Southside and the Not-So-Silent Auction.  Be sure to mark your calendar for Thursday, October 28th and stay tuned for upcoming emails regarding the event.

We're Making Changes and Need Your Input!

We have listened to some requests for longer hours at the Thrift Stores on Saturday. Beginning in August, both stores will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the month.  We will continue these hours if there is a good response.

We are aware that for some Monday-Friday contribution hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. are difficult.  We are considering  opening either earlier or staying here later one day a week.  So here's where you can give us feedback.  Would you be more likely to come before or after work and what day of the week would be best for you?  Please email

sheming@nnhouse.org with any feedback.

Sensational Summer

The children are finishing up their last two weeks of summer camp before returning to school.  The great news is that you've helped to ensure that when they return they'll be prepared for the year ahead.  Small group work centered around core reading, language arts and math skills continues to be a major principle of our summer programming.  Your support of the NNH has provided counselors who have focused on writing paragraphs, decoding words, reading comprehension in addition to basic and advanced math skills.

Volunteers this summer have also given selflessly of their time to mentor to our children.  Many groups and individuals have presented information about different careers and hobbies.  A special thanks to Chattanooga Fire Department, T-Ran, Larry Cummins(Stowers Machinery), The Purple Lady, Washboard Band,  Northwestern Mutual Financial Network,  Kelly Fitzgerald (Artech), Jennifer Killian-Smith (Neuhoff Taylor Architects), Jessie Noblett and Catherine Pala (Clear Spring Yoga) for their time.

GED Successes

A high school diploma or GED opens doors to workplaces and opportunities for NNH clients and program participants.  You play an active role in the successes of this program.  We are pleased to announce that two more students have received their GEDs bringing our total number of students successfully completing the NNH program to five in such a short span of time.
