Providing a Hand Up |
People often ask what changes we are seeing here at the NNH due to the economy. We have seen a drastic increase in the numbers asking for Emergency Direct Assistance and more specifically new clients. The story below is a great representation of the "typical" clients we're seeing.
Recently, "Stuart" came in to see our social worker. Stuart was employed with the same company for over 7 years and was laid off in January. He's still receiving unemployment checks that are just a fraction of his former salary and those will end soon. Stuart's daughter and granddaughter are in the household with him and their electricity was soon to be disconnected. When the social worker asked if they received food stamps, he said he hadn't applied as there were people who needed them more. The NNH was able to pay the majority of his electric bill after Stuart paid a small amount and his power stayed on.
Very grateful for the help, Stuart commented that he looked forward to being a donor again as soon as he got back on his feet.
Through January to July of 2009, we have assisted with 155 more utility bills than the same time in 2008. We thank you for your support which allows us to provide "a hand up, not a hand out" to those in need. |

School's Back in Session |
| The After-school Program is back in full swing with over 40 students who attend Red Bank Elementary and Middle Schools and Normal Park Museum Magnet Lower and Upper Schools.
Matt Facey, our new Education Director, has already been busy making school visits to monitor the students' social and academic progress.
A special thanks to John Palacio, head chef at Porter's Steakhouse/ Read House, who made a special visit Friday, August 21st and prepared a healthy snack with the help of the
children.

Children's Program....An Amazing Summer
The NNH Children's Program wrapped up their last week of camp at the end of July. This was one of our most successful summers due to the implementation of a few new programs for the students. In addition to the normal academic based curriculum, students studied various countries, learned about hobbies, interests and different careers. All of this learning came to life through hands-on experiences provided by a number of generous volunteers who shared their time and passions to show our children the endless opportunities which are available to them. Thanks to the following: Friday Academies: Northwestern Mutual - Suzanne Bidek, Paul Fitzgerald, Clarisa Barnes, Rachel Owens, Amy Allison, Barny Danks, Tim Franklin, Beth Palmer, Tyler Gay, Tyler Spry, Ben Francis, Joanne Denise, Joanne, Olsen, Bryce Thomas, John Sterner, Aaron Deimling; Clear Spring Yoga- Catherine Pala, Sue Reynolds, Marissa Nesbit; Gary and Naomi Lindsey; Emily Wittenberg. Presenters: Dr. Kevin Ade; Doug Suston; Vicki Moss; Vickie Champion; Junior League Washboard Band- Sandy Webb, Peg Willingham, Amanda Cauthen, Margaret Ann Bentley, Charlotte Witry, Eleanor Dobson, Anne Rittenberry, Imogene Konvalinka. Country Presenters: Kelly Allen, Swathy Ganduri, Amanda Galas, Kara Rice, Meghan Anderson.
