 Students' Success

Each afternoon the Neighborhood House is full of vibrant, engaged young children ready to tackle Reading, Spelling and Math assignments with the help of their tutors.  The homework completed here in the afternoon often reinforces new skills and concepts learned during the school day.
The benefit of our children receiving one-on-one assistance with their homework and extra help with reading daily is evident when report card time comes.  Below are the percentages of children receiving a grade of average and higher in each of the academic areas:
              Math- 85%
              Reading-83%
              Language Arts- 94%
              Spelling-88%

Direct Assistance Thank Yous

The influx of clients seen for assistance continues to keep our appointment sheets full and social workers very busy. Compared to the first quarter of 2008, we have seen a 65%increase in households served.  We continue with the same trend mentioned last month, with 46% of the people served year to date having never asked us for assistance in the past.
I wanted to share excerpts from two recent notes received from clients:

"Recently your program paid a portion of my power bill.  To ask was very hard for me.  You all were so kind and courteous to me!  The way I was treated helped me so much to not feel ashamed for asking."
"I am thankful for your assistance.  I am not accustomed to asking for assistance but you didn't make me feel like less of a woman because I needed it.  Thank you again for the words of encouragement."

On behalf of these clients AND all of the other individuals and families we serve, I SAY THANKS!  Whether you donate to or shop at our Thrift Store, volunteer or contribute financially to support the NNH, YOU play a part in providing "a hand up, not a hand out".

Donating to Our Thrift Store

Many people do not realize the far-reaching effects of donating to our Thrift Store.  The items you donate help people with limited incomes stretch their budgets in economically challenging times.  The money from the sale of these items benefits NNH programs -- assisting clients with utility bills or filling a necessary prescription, giving academic support to elementary and middle school students or providing a place for seniors to stay active and involved.  We appreciate your continued support!
