Katy's Ponderings...
suffrage, the disenfranchised, and a missed vote
I've been blogging about the morning after every two years for as long as I've been blogging. Although the parties in power have changed back and forth a few times now, for a person whose politics rarely intersect with what is known as mainstream the feeling on the Wednesday after is always one of inside out exhaustion with a twist of nausea. Even in years where I have voted for at least one winning candidate, the morning after felt like a party I wished I'd skipped.

CROP Walk Kudos! Many thanks to EUCC members and friends who supported the Metro St. Louis CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Walk! As of October 31, we raised $1,115 to support the work of Operation Food Search and Church World Service. Despite dreadful forecasts, the skies stayed clear in Forest Park on the afternoon of October 24, much to the relief of your intrepid and inter-generational CROP Walk team (walkers Bill Barrett, Gavin Barrett-Hayes, and Laurel Hayes; Jim Herz; Bob Risk and Ray Mulligan; Patty Pelikan; Tara and Vanessa Tetzlaff; Ken, Susan, and Zander Ulmer; and Lolly Wehrli; and table staffers Peggy Kachoulis, Gail Saxton, and Lori Winter). Much to our surprise, we won the "St. Louis Metro CROP Hunger Walk Top Fund Raising Team" plaque. Truth be told, we didn't deserve it: 2009 was our worst fundraising year in a decade. However, Ladue Chapel couldn't win three years in a row. Church World Service regional organizer Kari Davidson's dog raised $2,000 for the walk. The dog threw in its earnings with our team because of our church's longstanding participation in the walk -- and because Kari wanted to recognize Gavin Barrett-Hayes's personal dedication (at age twelve, this was his tenth walk). It's important to note, however, that many of you have also supported the CROP Walk for years. EUCC's CROP Walk teams have raised $17,445 over the past ten years alone. There is no data for the years prior to 2001, but EUCC's CROP participation extends back well beyond that date. You -- we -- are part of a "great cloud of witnesses" whose work, in a small way, helps to build the reign of God in the world. Thank you.

Stillpoint Campus Ministry at Webster University The first half of the term at Webster University went quickly. The cookies at Stillpoint's table at the beginning-of-term Involvement Fair were a draw, and a larger number of students than usual added their names to the mailing list. A weekly Tweet is now part of Stillpoint publicity. I continue to staff the Listening Post table during lunchtime on Mondays, which has been attracting staff as well as students. "Pause for (No) Thought: Meditation for Everyone," which meets on Wednesdays, has a core group of three and an ever-changing cast of drop-ins. In the past few weeks, it has been preceded by a book group discussing Joanna Macy and Molly Young Brown's Coming Back to Life: Practices to Reconnect Our Lives, Our World.
