Katy PicKaty's Ponderings...

count me in

Unlike the growing number of Americans who are leaving organized religion with the mantra "spiritual but not religious," I can't walk away from the institution that both inspires and aggravates me.

Having served as a full time parish pastor for more than two decades, and at this particular location for more than 14 of those years, a case could be made that I am simply professional stuck. Maybe so. But as I consider my membership in this local community of faith, the roots are much more personal.

EXTRAVAGANT INCLUSION

The Governing Body has begun an activity to even further extend EUCC's tradition of Extravagant Inclusion to all church members. We want to provide additional opportunities for connection, fellowship, encouragement, community and relationship building.

We want each person who wants purposeful connection to be provided this opportunity.

How?

  • An initial group of approximately ten people will form in November and go through May
  • This initial group willl be composed of a wide expanse of people representing our church community
  • Volunteers will be actively sought for the initial group
  • A host family will coordinate the Extravagant Inclusion activities for their group
  • Several different methods/forms for connection will be used: social media, phone, visits, a dinner

The feedback from this initial group will be discussed in June to determine the best way to expand Extravagant Inclusion to the rest of EUCC.

Please let Janet Rundquist (314-307-9709 or jsrkitten@aol.com) know if you'd be interested in participating in this initial group or sign up in the narthex 10/31.

Extravagant Inclusion - Let's leave no one out!

A Celebration of the Life of Louis Nollau

November 5th and 5th

WELCOME DINNER AT EUCC

November 1st

Many of our Evangelical churches and institutions in the St. Louis area were started by Louis Edward Nollau, whose 200th birthday was celebrated in Reichenbach, Germany, this past July.  Nancy Mack and Marilyn Stavenger from our congregation were in attendance for that celebration, as well as many others from this area.  Now it's our turn to host a celebration here with the arrival of twelve persons from Germany.  Eden Seminary is planning a Nollau Colloquy on November 5 and 6, to which you are invited!

The event will feature lectures on historical and contemporary issues as well as time for fellowship, meals, and a few surprises!  Look up further details at www.eden.edu and join us all day Friday and Saturday until noon.

Actually, our guests will be arriving from Germany on Monday afternoon, November 1st, and will have their first "American" meal here at our church that evening.  If you are interested in being a part of this welcome, contact Lolly Wehrli (636) 861-0287.

Beading Fun with the Quilters & Artists

November 3rd

All crafters are invited to join the Quilters & Artists for a morning of beading from 9 - 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 3 in Fellowship Hall.  Jewelry designer Gloria Wells will lead us in making name tag necklaces, which we will sell at our Advent Fair booth.  Feel free to come and go at whatever times work for you.

If you would like to place a special order for a church name tag necklace in specific colors, please contact Gloria Wells at gloriasbeads@yahoo.com or 314-968-9026.  Cost for a necklace is $5, which will benefit EUCC's Capital Campaign.

Collecting Calendars

'Tis the season when 2011 calendars are starting to show up in our mailboxes.  If you are being showered with more calendars than you can possibly use, consider donating them to the EUCC Quilters & Artists.  We will see that they are given to folks in nursing homes who could really make use of them.  There is a collection box just outside the church office.  For more information, or to make additional suggestions on where to donate the calendars, contact Paula Lindberg at 636-225-5325 or pclindberg@charter.net.

Community Booth at the Advent Fair

The EUCC Quilters and Artists will have a booth at the Advent Fair to sell items they have made, for the benefit of the church's Capital Campaign.  It will be an old fashioned church bazaar sort of table.  We invite folks in the congregation who might not want an entire booth to themselves to donate a few items to this table.  For more information, contact Gail Saxton at 314-821-7917 or acsaxtonjr@aol.com.

WORLD COMMUNITY DAY 2010 "BUILDING THE BELOVED COMMUNITY"

HUNGER IN THE VILLAGE

Sunday, November 21st

At 9:45am, the 1st through 6th grade children and their teachers invite ALL of the community  to join in a Hunger in the Village event in Fellowship Hall.  Arrive promptly at 9:45 to be part of The Great Sort!  By 10:45 the event will come to a close.  3 through 5 year olds will meet for an experience in their own classrooms from 9:45 to 10:45.

ADVENT FAIR
December 5th

EUCC's Alternative Advent Fair is coming on December 5! Please join us to shop for gifts for your family and friends from charitable organizations and local artisans.

So far we have jewelry, photography, music, pottery, woodworking, and glass art for the Advent Fair. We have chances to support Eden Seminary, Church World Service, and Heifer International. A Special Need at Shannondale

Jeff Fulk, the minister and manager of Shannondale Community Center, a rural and outdoor ministry of our Missouri Mid-South Conference of the UCC, lives with his family in a Conference-owned house onsite.  His wife Laurie has been ill on and off for a while, prompting a home inspection which showed very clearly that the house has a terrible mold problem.  Their home urgently needs attention.  Work estimates range near $4,000.  If you wish to make a contribution, you can donate online at www.missourimidsouth.org, or send a check to the Missouri Mid-South Conference, 411 East Lockwood Ave., 63119, with "Shannondale House" in the memo line.
