A Message from our Worship Team

Katy PicKaty's Ponderings...

perfect storms, perfect rainbows

For every perfect storm, there is a perfect rainbow and this week it was the promise of the upended bow that caught our breath. In a magical intersection of technology, politics, and human goodness, thirty-three Chilean miners emerged from the pit of the earth that had claimed them into the arms of their families who had demanded them back.

ADULT EDUCATION THIS WEEK

PARENT GROUP:

9:45am Classroom #21

This Sunday, October 17th, The Parent Group will have an introduction to the Myers-Briggs TypeŽ Indicator (personality assessment).  Jane will present an overview of the assessment concepts, but participants will not take a full-blown assessment.

The assessment addresses four main questions:

  1. Where do you prefer to focus your attention and get your energy?
  2. How do you take in information?
  3. How do you prefer to make decisions?
  4. How to you prefer to deal with the outer world?

We'll get an idea of our own Type as parents and take away tools and resources learn what our children's Types may be.  Future discussions will/may focus on the inevitable challenges/benefits of being a family with similar/different preferences and how to meet our own needs and those of our children as well.

Two resources that will be useful to parents include:

Nurture by Nature: How to Raise Happy, Healthy, Responsible ChildrenThrough the Insights of Personality Type by Paul Teiger & Barbara Barron-Tieger AND Motherstyles: using Personality Type to Discover your Strengths by Janet P. Penley.

All parents are welcome whethere they've been to earlier meetings or not.  You may contact Jane Miles @ janemiles@att.net or 314-968-6851 with any questions.

EXTRAVAGANT INCLUSION

The Governing Body has begun an activity to even further extend EUCC's tradition of Extravagant Inclusion to all church members. We want to provide additional opportunities for connection, fellowship, encouragement, community and relationship building.

We want each person who wants purposeful connection to be provided this opportunity.

How?

  • An initial group of approximately ten people will form in November and go through May
  • This initial group willl be composed of a wide expanse of people representing our church community
  • Volunteers will be actively sought for the initial group
  • A host family will coordinate the Extravagant Inclusion activities for their group
  • Several different methods/forms for connection will be used: social media, phone, visits, a dinner

The feedback from this initial group will be discussed in June to determine the best way to expand Extravagant Inclusion to the rest of EUCC.

Please let Janet Rundquist (314-307-9709 or jsrkitten@aol.com) know if you'd be interested in participating in this initial group or sign up in the narthex 10/31.

Extravagant Inclusion - Let's leave no one out!

CROP HUNGER WALKS

October 24th

Have you felt overwhelmed by the earthquake in Haiti, the floods in Pakistan, and the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico?  You can help by walking - or sponsoring a walker -- in the Metro St. Louis CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Walk.
Church World Service <www.churchworldservice.org>, , a relief and development organization representing our own United Church of Christ and another thirty-plus denominations, is active in all of those places - indeed, all over the world.  Three-quarters of the money raised will go to CWS; one-quarter will go to food banks here in St. Louis.
The main CROP Walk will step off from the Upper Muny parking lot in Forest Park at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 24.
If you would like to walk, stop by the CROP Walk table in the narthex on any Sunday or contact Laurel Hayes <laurel.hayes@sbcglobal.net>.

A Special Need at Shannondale

Jeff Fulk, the minister and manager of Shannondale Community Center, a rural and outdoor ministry of our Missouri Mid-South Conference of the UCC, lives with his family in a Conference-owned house onsite.  His wife Laurie has been ill on and off for a while, prompting a home inspection which showed very clearly that the house has a terrible mold problem.  Their home urgently needs attention.  Work estimates range near $4,000.  If you wish to make a contribution, you can donate online at www.missourimidsouth.org, or send a check to the Missouri Mid-South Conference, 411 East Lockwood Ave., 63119, with "Shannondale House" in the memo line.

EMPTY BOWLS FUNDRAISER

January 23, 2011

Webster-Rock Hill Ministries is planning an Empty Bowls fundraiser for January 23, 2011 (tentative) and needs the help of supporting churches and their members even in the planning stages.

Empty Bowls have successfully raised money and awareness for social service agencies across the country by offering a simple soup/bread supper for guests but allowing them to take home with them handmade "soup" bowls. Music and craft demonstrations make it a party.

We know that there are artisans and crafty people out there who make beautiful bowls out of clay, metal, glass, gourds, wood, fiber, and other media, but we don't know who they are. If you or someone you know would be able to donate one or more bowls please tell us. Perhaps there are groups, of all ages, who might get together and do this. The bowls should be roughly 5"-6" wide, can be decorative and/or functional, and need not be perfect!

In addition to bowls we are seeking sources of soups and breads, musicians/entertainers, and raw materials for bowls such as clay, glazes, and facilities for firing clay.

With the collective input from all of the supporting congregations and their members Empty Bowls can provide much-needed funds for Webster-Rock Hill Ministries, as well as some much-needed fun for all of us in the middle of winter.

Please contact Marilyn Claggett (moann11@aol.com, 968-1653) or Kathy Chamberlin (kathy.chamberlin@yahoo.com, 477-3596) with your ideas and suggestions.

Neighbors in Need (NIN) is a special mission offering of the UCC that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States.  One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministries.  Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC's Justice and Witness Ministries to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts and direct service projects.
