April 2010 - it's SPRING!

Welcome to Transitional Housing!
Luncheon masthead

Greetings!

So many wonderful things are happening at THI in the past few months that I just couldn't keep it all to myself, but I must share one story that I think best explains the importance of Transitional Housing in our community.

Success is achievement of an objective or a goal.  To most of the women that we serve setting a goal is an achievement.  Terella, a 48 year old female who moved to THI January of 2008, came in with a long substance abuse history dating back to age 16, less than a few months of sobriety time, limited work skills, a prior history with the criminal justice system , poor family relationships and no identifiable goals.

Upon her arrival she was very reluctant to engage in services and would often isolate in her room and refuse to meet with staff.  A breakthrough came when she had an intervention with the program Supervisor, Leslie Burnside and soon she began to meet regularly with her Program Advisor and began working with SOAR (our work and training program).  In addition to her work with S.O.A.R, she set goals for herself, worked on her sobriety and money management skills.  She obtained a part-time position at YMCA in August of last year.

Today, Terella is a new person.  She moved into permanent housing February of this year and has since been promoted to a full time supervisor's position at the YMCA.  She has a good relationship with her family and is feeling very positive about the direction her life is taking.  She has plans to pursue a Bachelor's degree at Cleveland State this fall.

Success stories such as this, is why we must keep our doors open. THI truly "empowers women and transforms lives."

Program Highlight - FOLLOW UP

THI's Follow Up services begin before participants move out of THI.  Our Follow up Coordinator assists each woman in securing practical needs such as home furnishings, applying for housing subsidies, appropriate working relationships with landlords, substance abuse education, as well as accessing community services as needed.  THI provides supportive and intensive case management services to women following their move into permanent housing, to help the individual and family attain improved social and or economic stability.  Home visits are done regularly for 18-24 months following a participant's move into permanent housing.
