 The 22nd Drawing Show Residue

October 14 - November 27, 2011
Steve Holmes, Guest Curator
Curator's Statement
"Drawing is about residue. A drawing is the trace left behind. Leaving behind traces, drawing is life, drawing is residue. Graphite on paper, pigment on stone. Hatred, love, compassion, anger, grace - these also leave tracks behind. Residue examines the tracks left behind."

This juried exhibition has allowed the BCA to work with more than 500 artists and over 20 guest curators from across the country. Proposals are welcome from all artists and designers who explore drawing as a medium in their work.

Steve Holmes is the Adjunct Curator of Contemporary Art at the Bass Museum of Art in Miami and the Head Curator of the Cartin Collection. Holmes was the originator of the recent multi-city reenactment of Fairytale - 1001 Chairs for Ai Weiwei, in support of the artis with actions in Hong Kong, Bern, Berlin, Brussels, Frankfurt, Munich, Stockholm, London, Dublin, Lisbon, Madrid, Sao Paolo, Rio, New York, Boston, Toronto, Chicago, San Francisco, Vancouver and Los Angeles.

Holly's Story:

I recall that my first true artistic creation came when I was just nine years old.  The circumstances that surrounded it, I believe, were to be my 'crystallizing experience'.  I remember it vividly.  I had drawn an antique car and shown it to my older brother.  He snatched it from my hand and tore it up while insisting snidely that I hadn't drawn it.  I couldn't have.  It was too good-too perfect. Plus I was a girl.  What did I know about cars?

I should have been angry that he destroyed the picture, but I wasn't.  I was elated.  He didn't believe that I was the one who had drawn it.  But I had.  And I could do it again.  And I knew it.

Photoshop Tip

The Crop Tool is easy to use and can make a big difference in how your photo looks. I like the picture below, but I want it to be cropped differently and straightened.

before Photo

1) First select the Crop Tool in the tool bar by clicking it. After you have selected it, click and drag to make a box around the entire image.

Crop Tool

2) We will start by straightening the photo. Place your cursor at the corner of the image and slowly move it up until your cursor becomes a curved line with arrows on either end. Now click and drag the mouse.
