 The 22nd Drawing Show Residue

October 14 - November 27, 2011
Steve Holmes, Guest Curator
Curator's Statement
"Drawing is about residue. A drawing is the trace left behind. Leaving behind traces, drawing is life, drawing is residue. Graphite on paper, pigment on stone. Hatred, love, compassion, anger, grace - these also leave tracks behind. Residue examines the tracks left behind."

Since 1979 the Drawing Show has been a widely anticipated hallmark of the BCA's programming. This juried exhibition has allowed the BCA to work with more than 500 artists and over 20 guest curators from across the country. Proposals are welcome from all artists and designers who explore drawing as a medium in their work.

Steve Holmes is the Adjunct Curator of Contemporary Art at the Bass Museum of Art in Miami and the Head Curator of the Cartin Collection. Holmes was the originator of the recent multi-city reenactment of Fairytale - 1001 Chairs for Ai Weiwei, in support of the artis with actions in Hong Kong, Bern, Berlin, Brussels, Frankfurt, Munich, Stockholm, London, Dublin, Lisbon, Madrid, Sao Paolo, Rio, New York, Boston, Toronto, Chicago, San Francisco, Vancouver and Los Angeles.

Artist of the Month:

Holly Bell - Photographer

I am a mixed-media artist, photographer, mom, nature-lover and daydreamer. I find beauty, life, and character in the abandoned, ignored, hidden, discarded, and disregard.   My photography captures reality with originality and brings to life the lifeless.

A former social worker, with no formal education or training in photography, I felt overwhelmingly compelled to pick up a camera for the first time a little over a year ago during an acutely stressful time in my life. It occurred to me that I could capture images that reflected how I was feeling or what I was thinking at a given moment.  I began to notice pictures "everywhere". The camera was not a tool, but instead became an extension of me. So, as I like to say, I take pictures with my soul....not my camera.

Photoshop Tip

The bush tool in Photoshop is used for many things besides just bushing color. One of the fun things to do with brushes is to use the presets. Photoshop ships with a variety of brush shapes but you can also download shapes from the internet. If you are a member of NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) you can get several sets from that site. There are also many free downloads on the internet. (Just be sure to know your source to avoid viruses and malware).
