Photoshop Tips:

For Beginners:
It is often said that most digtal Photos can use some sharping. Most books advise doing that as a last step. However, if you have layers built up when you go to the unsharp mask filter you will only have the top layer to work on.   (filter>sharpen>unsharp mask)
In order to have a finished layer to sharpen you need to make a composite layer: (hold down shift/ctr/alt at the same time and then click the letter "e"). In Sharpening, a little goes a long way.  Amount: should be under 100%. Radius: I usually go about .50-.70 pixels. Threshold can be left alone.   If you find that some areas are over sharpened, you can use a mask on that layer and paint out the over-shapened areas with black.

Advanced Photoshop User tip: A Layer Style can be made into its own layer. This is useful if, for example, you want to distort a drop shadow so that it looks like it is being cast by a specific light source. To make a drop shadow its own layer first select the layer you want to have a shadow (a separated object, perhaps). Go to the Layers Style icon on the bottom of the layers pallet (looks like a distored letters fx)  From dialog box chose Drop Shadow checkbox. Use sliders to create your drop shadow. Click ok. then with that layer still selected go to Layers on Menu, chose Layer Styles from the drop down menu. From the next dropdown menu chose Create a Layer (near the bottom) You will get a question box. click ok. Now the drop shadow is on its own layer and can be transformed.

Dona Beck, Fiber Artist

Donna is a fiber artist who lives in Monson and works at the Indian Orchard Mills. Her uniquely crafted art objects can be seen in our GoNE, Inc. Gallery.

Artist's Statement:
I can't remember a time in my life when I wasn't "making art." And fibers have always been a big part of my creative explorations. I began sewing, knitting, embroidering, crocheting and woodworking in elementary school. Now I work mainly with fibers used in papermaking. I've been working with handmade paper and pulp for about 10 years now-incorporating other fibers, beads, found objects, stitching, basketry and packaging techniques as accents. I am particularly drawn to paper casting and exploring the 3-D possibilities of paper, probably an extension of my earlier interest and studies in sculpting and clay work. My pieces incorporate an obvious connection to the natural world and often focus on feminine and spiritual (Celtic) themes.
The natural world usually finds its way into my work. It's a world I fear we're losing touch with, and it influences me tremendously.  Many of the found natural objects I use are works of art in themselves.

Event Review
Over 40 regional photographers gathered in Palmer on Saturday, July 18 to participate in Scott Kelby's Second Annual Worldwide Photowalk. Palmer was the only city in Western Massachusetts to participate.  Over 900 cities world wide and over 32,000 photographers took part in this unprecedented social event and competition.  The photographers gathered in Palmer at the Burgundy Brook farm to start the walk. Bluestar Equiculture Farm provided the group with a hay ride into the back areas of the farm and along the river.  The group ended the walk at Steaming Tenders Restaurant in Palmer for some sunset shooting of rails and trains. You can go to the official Worldwide Photowalk site to view the entered photographs from each city. www.worldwidephotowalk.com

One photo was chosen from the Palmer Worldwide Photowalk to be in the Worldwide competition.  The Palmer winner is Lani Giguere from Longmeadow, MA.  Her winning entry was a closely cropped photo of a black horse. Her photo will be among the 900+ photos entered from all around the world. Giguere has been a professional photographer since 2003. She has recently started her own photographic business specializing in children's events.  The top prize winner of this worldwide event will receive over $16,000 in prizes. There will also be 10 honorable mentions. The winners will be announced on August 17, 2009.
