Greetings!
Welcome to the May Newsletter from Giclee of New England, Inc. We have a new blog. Please check it out and leave comments, www.goneinc.wordpress.com
The blog will feature ways to market art, art news, and musings from yours truly. The journey and learning process of blog creation will be chronicled for those who are thinking trying it out. In the software review section of this newsletter the blog software is discussed.
We are very proud to feature GAIL BRUCE as our artist of the month. Not only is Gail a talented artist but she is a busy activist for several worth while causes.
For those who know RYAN JACQUE, a Brimfield Artist, www.ryanjacque.com, you will be happy to know he is making great progress from his accident.
But he and his family would appreciate notes of support and encouragement. There is also a need for assistance to drive Ryan to his therapy sessions. If you have some time and would like to help, go to his web site and access the "Ryan's condition page" and send a message.
We are having a Scratch and Dent Sale in the studio this month. Old frames, various sizes and colors of matboard and some prints will be offered at giveaway prices.
We are now offering a Framed Print Package. For artists who are planning a show and need framed prints this will be a great deal. Quick turnaround time, too.
Remember to send me your art event or class news. Send an email to goneinc@goneinc.com with for the newsletter in the subject box. |

Art vs. Design
An international Open Call for Unique Talent Details:
Images are power. In this dynamic era compelling design can move millions and transcendent art can inspire a generation. From cave paintings of early man to today's industrial designers, art & design has uniquely shaped the world around us, each in its own distinct way. This contest is designed to answer the age old question: What shapes our world more, art or design? To find the answer, we need YOU to enter the dialogue. This competition was put together by a handful of Brooklyn based artists and designers who have experienced first-hand the difficulties of achieving national attention. We believe both Art & Design hold a powerful place in our society and it is our intention to break-out new talent through a process that is dynamic and open-ended. Along with creating opportunities for all the artists who participate, we are awarding over $11,000 in prizes. Two Grand Prize winners will be awarded with: * A gala reception at a major New York City Modern Art Museum * $2009 cash grant * International Publicity * A feature in Filter Magazine * $500 in gear from Akademiks * Plus the Red Bull Prize. Choose from the following: A vintage Vespa, a trip to London to visit the Tate Museum and the Design Museum or a fully loaded Mac Book Pro. Every participant gets: * An online portfolio and international exposure. * A "Thank You" package with gear and discounts to help further your work.

Photoshop Tips:
For Beginners:
The Keyboard shortcut for Transform is "Ctrl+t" When the handles appear around the object or layer to be tranformed you can chose what method of transformation you want to use by right clicking inside the tranformation box. If you hold down the control key while transforming you can skew or bypass the jump to grid rule. If you hold down the Shift Key while transforming, you will constrain the proportions and not distort your image.
Advanced Photoshop User tip:
Setting your color space and defining a profile for your files is important. The most common color spaces are sRGB IEC-1966-2.1, Adobe RGB, and ProPhoto RGB. To define your color space go to EDIT>Color Settings>drop down menu and chose your RGB color space. sRGB is the default setting and is the default setting of most cameras. This has, however, a limited color gamute. Higher end cameras can be set with the Adobe RGB color space which has a much wider gamute. ProPhoto RGB is the largest of the available color spaces. You should care that you file has a profile (which is added by photoshop via your color space). Files without a profile will not be consistant and you will not be able to control your color output. |
Featured Artist
A native of Chicago, raised in California, educated at Pepperdine, UCLA and Hunter, Gail Hire Bruce modeled throughout Europe and America in her teens and early twenties. She worked regularly for the major designers and publications from Chanel to Vreeland and Vogue. She was a favorite model of Irving Penn. Discovered by director Howard Hawks, she acted in films and television until her late twenties. www.Gailbruce.com
Her formal training in art came at the Arts Student League in New York and the Woodbury School of Design in Los Angeles, and by the time she took up serigraphy in 1974, she was clearly a self-developed original. So apparent was her freshness of design and concept that the color separations, from her first serigraph editions, were used by the Museum of Modern Art in a serigraphy demonstration class.
Her distinctive painting style is the result of profound influences: the clean and simple look of Irving Penn's photographs, the tranquility of Japanese images, and the mystery of a Chumash Indian Elder, who inspired Gail to become a Native American Education Activist. Gail is also a founder of www.Beenative.org a nonprofit organization.
upscale West Village loft locations for Events, Art and Productions. She is a founding board member of The American Indian College Fund. She is the creator and founder of the Cultural Learning Centers Initiative for the American Indian Higher Education Consortium, which has built learning centers at 29 American Indian Tribal Colleges in 12 states. Gail is on the Multicultural Outreach Advisory Board of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and is cofounder of Unreserved, a not-for-profit devoted to celebrating and leveraging American Indian fashion and art.

Software Review
With so much software on the market it is often difficult to chose when trying a new venue. I was planning to start a blog and needed something that would do everything I wanted and was easy to use. On the recomendation of Mike Wolik (see last month's artist of the month) I looked into Wordpress. This open source blogging software is easy to use, FREE, and hosts your blog as well. www.wordpress.org If you are ready to enter the Blogosphere this is a great starting point. |
