Ceramic Studio to Offer Spring Workshop in African Coiling
The Juliet Rose Gallery and Studio of Monson will be offering a spring pottery workshop for beginners and experienced potters at the studio,191 Reimers Road, Monson.
The African Coiling Workshop, focusing on round forms, will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2009 from 10am - 4pm, with a potluck lunch break.
This handbuilding technique permits artists to create bowls, vases and many other forms without the use of a wheel. The quick, versatile & creative clay technique is perfect for beginners or professional clay artists. However, it is not widely known outside of Africa and the Caribbean nor is it found in ceramic books. Juliet Bacchas and Linda Spelko, of the Juliet Rose Gallery hope to share this technique with everyone interested in learning a great and ancient hand-building technique working in clay.
Cost for the full day workshop is $150.00. Cost for studio members is $120.00, and for students $95.00. The workshop experience includes firing of the pieces created. Participants will complete one large or two small bowls during the workshop.
Follow-up workshops in Vertical forms and Open & Flared forms will be held in the fall.
To register, call the Juliet Rose Gallery and Studio, 413-596-9741 or email julietrose1@verizon.net |
Photoshop Tips:
For beginners: Keyboard shortcuts can save a lot of time and energy. The most important one for me is the Brush size shortcut. Since so many tools in Photoshop use brushes it is a good one to learn. You can change bush size on the fly to the exact size you need visually. Just hold down the Bracket Keys (Next to "P" on keyboard). The Left Bracket makes the brush smaller, the right Bracket makes it larger.
Advanced Photoshop User tip: Blending modes, (drop down arrow under layers on layers pallet) can be used for many kinds of special effects. If you have a white background that you want to lose (text imported to your image for example), put that layer's blending mode to Darken. If you want to make the image appear inside the text use Lighten. Be sure to use a thick bold font if you want to have the image come through the text. Remember, the layer you want the blending mode to affect should be on top of the others. |
Art in the News
Police in New York City have arrested a photographer for taking photos in the subway. Although this is not against the law, police are enforing non-existent rules. When the freedom to take Photographs is being tested, all artists are threatened. This is another news article about issues that effect all creative people.
