Erland Waltner, pioneer of integration, dies
The one person who had the greatest influence on the beginning of AMBS, Erland Waltner, died Sunday, April 12, in Goshen, Ind. He was 94 years old. After giving
significant leadership to launching the association of Mennonite
Biblical Seminary and Goshen Biblical Seminary in 1958, he served as president
of MBS for 20 years. In addition, he served in many other significant
leadership roles in the General Conference Mennonite Church, Mennonite
World Conference, Mennonite Health Association and Mennnonite Medical
Association. However, it is his qualities as a person that
people are remembering and remarking on these days after his death.
"Wise," "gracious," faithful" and "humble" are the words used to
describe this person who opened so many doors of cooperation in what
has become Mennonite Church USA and Mennonite Church Canada. Services on Friday, April 17, are as follows: Visitation: 9 a.m., Chapel of the Sermon on the Mount Funeral: 10 a.m., Chapel of the Sermon on the Mount Burial at Prairie Street Cemetery Meal at Hively Avenue Mennonite Church Read more about Erland's life and contributions on the AMBS Web site.
