What a fabulous evening we had last Saturday at the fourth annual Harvest Celebration at Rushton Farm.
The bonfire was lit at sundown, and soon the aroma of roasted marshmallows was in the air.
Fall Migrants and Saw-Whet Owls are Here!! This past Tuesday (October 18) was our second big "fallout" day, at our Rushton Woods Preserve bird banding station, where a large number of migrating birds were captured, banded and released. That morning we banded 93 birds of 20 species, which is 7 birds over Rushton's previous record of 86!
These birds are attracted to the open spaces of the Willistown area and find rich habitat for resting and refueling as they head south for the winter.

That week we also captured a stunning Sharp-shinned Hawk, fortuitously witnessed by 100 visiting Honors Environmental Science students from Conestoga High School.

We captured our first Northern Saw-Whet Owl of the season last Friday night at about 9:00 pm. It was a feisty young female weighing in at about 92 grams.
