IN THE BAG tidbits from Fred

2011 Farm Staff

Meet the 2011 Rushton Farm Staff.  (L to r),
Ashley Brister, Lisa Wimble, Joanna Whitnah, Fred de Long.

Welcome to the Rushton Farm CSA!

Season four is a season of change at Rushton.  Change is aFarmshed constant in life and on the farm is witnessed on a daily basis.  One of the biggest changes for the farm this year is the absence of Aaron de Long, who for the past three years has managed the farm with an ecologist's mind, an artist's sensibility and the nurturing heart of a master gardener.  He has been a great mentor and teacher to the many who have had the privilege of working with him in the fields at Rushton.  Aaron has moved on to a farm in Vermont.

Chelsea Allen who has been a quiet and steadying presence on the farm for the past two seasons has also moved on to pursue more musical ambitions and urban gardening in West Philadelphia.

Two new farmers have joined the staff at Rushton to help fill their shoes- Lisa Wimble and Joanna Whitnah.

Lisa brings farming experience from her two seasons working at Charlestown Cooperative Farm  and a B.S. in Public and Environmental Health from West Chester University.

Joanna has worked abroad in agricultural development, worked on farms in Florida and Massachusetts and has a degree in sustainable agriculture from Gordon College in MA.

Both Lisa and Joanna have already contributed greatly to the Farm Program, leading volunteers and student groups, managing the greenhouse with our greatly expanded production for plant sales, planted thousands of feet of fruits and vegetables, and enlightened the farm with their positive attitudes and laughter during the frantic pace of spring.

As the faces at the farm are changing so is the farm itself. Rushton Farm is now part of Rushton Woods Preserve, an 80 acre preserve that will showcase the work of Willistown Conservation Trust and its environmental programs.

Starting May 28th the preserve will be open to the public daily from 8:30 to 9.  We welcome the community to walk the fields and woods of Rushton and participate in the many activities taking place at the farm ranging from bird banding to wildflower planting and particularly the farm events that will take place throughout the season.

As an open preserve we still ask that visitors respect the fields of Rushton Farm and remember that it is still a working farm and the Rushton Farm Staff needs to concentrate on growing the food that feeds our members.
