The Atomic Blast Summer Program held a special Open House on Friday, the 6th, for parents, the community and Club friends. The open house featured summer accomplishments in the areas of science, math, reading and art enrichment. The youth have been learning a lot this summer and it was time to show it off!
Keystone Club members from the Hawthorne and Leslie Units participated again this year in the Taco Bell Foundation for Teens "Show Our Support (SOS)" Campaign, a national campaign aimed at bringing awareness to and support for those affected by war whether locally, nationally or globally. The Keystoners held a Power of "1" Health & Safety Fair on August 5 from 3-6 p.m. at the Hawthorne Unit, with free medical, eye and dental screenings, vendors, free food, fun activities, and prizes.
The first intra-squad Club track meet of 2010 was held on August 5 at the Sumner High School track in Kansas City, KS. Look for results in the next issue of This Week.
A partnership between the Clubs and Missouri Care brought Beach Bash 2010 to the Thornberry Unit on July 31. Sponsored by Missouri Care Health Plan, this FREE pool party was a great way to promote the Clubs and Missouri Care to the surrounding community. With fun and snacks, everyone had a great time!
Male members from all five sites recently attended the 4th Annual African American Male Teen Summit at UMKC. The young men were challenged with workshops on manhood, money, HIV/STDs, and leadership, and they also met successful African American leaders in the community.
A group of Club teens recently attended the Taco Bell College Experience at UMKC and really got a taste of what it takes to make it in college. They participated in workshops, toured the campus and participated in a scavenger hunt that exposed them to all areas of college life before spending the night on campus in a dorm. It was a great learning experience for our members.
