Congratulations to Ryan Allen from the Wyandotte County Unit (photo at left) who was recently selected as the winner of a Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year Award from Marquette University for fall, 2010! This full-tuition award is renewable for four years (eight semesters)! Way to go Ryan!
The 3rd Annual SMART Girls Conference "You Can't Block My Flow" was held at Park University this past weekend, July 23-24, for 150 girls between the ages of 12 and 18. The conference is intended to show the young ladies of our community the many avenues of support and resources they have at their fingertips.
The Teen Summer Camp this summer has been based on various areas of art - each week is themed with program activities and field trips in conjunction with each media. Recently, the teens created murals at Loose Park and also participated in a community event at Crown Center for the annual Chalk & Walk Festival, where they marked off areas for mural designs, stuffed gift bags and set up vendor tables and chairs. It was a great community service project for our teens!
The Clubs hosted the Geek Squad Summer Academy July 19-21 at the Thornberry Unit. The Academy, presented by Geek Squad and Best Buy, hosted 200 members, grades 6-12, from all Club sites for this 3-day event. The program's mission is to inspire the younger generation's direct involvement with technology. Through fun interactive classes and activities, the Academy aimed to demystify technology for students and help them navigate an increasingly "techie" world. Classes included basics of building a computer, internet safety, and optional classes were offered in digital video and music production. Many thanks to Geek Squad and Best Buy for providing such an innovative and engaging program for our youth!
Once again this year, Team Smile provided free dental screening and treatment to several hundred Club youth on Friday, July 16. Club kids were bussed to the Stadium where they spent the morning not only receiving free dental care, but playing in the Outfield Experience at the K. The next Wednesday, the kids were invited back together at the Stadium to watch a Royals game! Thank you to Team Smile and the Kansas City Royals for making this day possible for our kids!
A group of Club teens recently had the opportunity to tour the KMBC Channel 9 News Station with sports reporter (and RBI supporter) Nick Griffith. The teens role played as weather reporters and news anchors and got to tour the whole facility. It was the perfect experience for those interested in Broadcasting & Journalism as potential future careers.
