| What's Been Going On? |

After a very busy week in an "Extreme Makeover", the Leslie Unit revealed its fabulous face-lift on Friday afternoon with a special unveiling and ribbon cutting ceremony. The makeover was made possible by Community of Christ, along with various donations and support from the Independence business community. 300 Community of Christ volunteers from around the globe worked all week long (in town for their 2010 World Conference) upgrading the facility for the over 900 Independence-area youth served by the Unit. Renovations included a brand new kitchen, carpet, lighting, fresh paint inside and out, and an upgraded gymnasium. The Clubs thank Community of Christ (especially Project Coordinator Tom Cochran) and the many volunteers and supporters who helped make this possible for our kids!
This past Saturday, 50 Club members participated in a Culinary Arts Class at Applebee's in Lenexa. AMC Theatre and Junior League "Kids in the Kitchen" sponsored this fun day of teaching and empowering youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues. We thank them for including our kids!
The East Side Unit held a Super Duper Sleepover on Friday night for young Club members, and they are also looking forward to a Teen Party on April 30 at the Club.
Annitra McDonald, our very own 2010 Missouri State Youth of the Year winner is busy preparing for the Youth of the Year Regional Competition which will take place this summer. In the meantime, we will post updates of her preparations on our web site. Click here to check out Annitra's Fox 4 "Reaching for Excellence" feature with Phil Witt.
Vote for our kids! Vote once a day during the month of April to help Variety Kansas City win $250,000 towards the purchase of mobility vans for special needs children through the Pepsi Refresh Everything Project. If Variety gets funded (a top 2 ranking) the Clubs benefit as well! Click here to vote daily during April!
Don't forget to use GoodSearch.com for your online searches and GoodShop.com for your online shopping to benefit the Clubs. Just enter "Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City" as the charity you want to support! |
