What's Been Going On?

Annitra McDonald
Congratulations to Annitra McDonald from the East Side Unit who was named the 2010 Missouri State Youth of the Year on March 31 in Jefferson City. Annitra (photos at top and left) beat out local winners from all over Missouri for this most prestigious honor, received a $1,000 college scholarship, and will now move on to the regional competition. Click here to check out Annitra's Fox 4 "Reaching for Excellence" feature with Phil Witt and join us in congratulating Annitra on all of her accomplishments!

Club youth at all five sites recently celebrated National Boys & Girls Clubs Week March 22-26 with five days of activities and events - each day focused on one of the five Core Program areas: Character & Leadership; Education, Career & Technology; Health & Life Skills; The Arts; and Sports, Fitness & Recreation. Programs and activities included neighborhood cleanups, nutrition presentations, Easter egg hunts, banner competitions, games room tournaments and much more! (See photo below of youth at the Leslie Unit participating in relay races during Sports & Fitness Day).

Two Club members have been selected as regional winners in the BGCA National Fine Arts Competition. Kenneth Ikerd (age 18) from the Wyandotte County Unit qualified in Pastels with "The Color of my Skin" and Bryan Blanks (age 11) from the Thornberry Unit qualified in Printmaking with "Spirits". Congratulations to both young men who will now compete at the national level!

Don't forget that the first JCPenney Afterschool Roundup of the year is running now through April 6. Through this program, customers at JCPenney can make donations to the Afterschool Fund at the cash register by rounding up their purchase to the next whole dollar. All donations collected by our local Kansas City JCPenney stores will be donated to our local Clubs! So head to your local JCPenney store and "round up" for the Clubs!

Vote for our kids!
