Greetings!

What's Been Going On?

Snow shot
The Clubs were honored to recently win Best in Show at the Philly Awards during the Philanthropy Midwest conference for our Annual Report! The judging panel thought it was a great marketing piece and that the design was very compelling, making them want to read and know more. We were thrilled to receive this prestigious award and thank designer Dawn Allman for creating such a great piece for us!

On Friday, December 11, the Clubs officially broke ground at the site of the future J & D Wagner Unit on the East Side of Kansas City, MO. Community leaders and Club friends united for a ceremonial dirt turning at the site at 24th and Elmwood before taking tours of the actual building. Construction is under way!

The inaugural Dinner On Ice event at the new Independence Events Center was a rousing success on December 2. Members of the new Missouri Mavericks hockey team served as waiters for the evening and all tips and proceeds were donated directly to the Clubs. Over $22,000 was raised! Some Club youth from our Independence sites even got to play some broom ball on the ice with the Mavericks' mascot, Mac. It was a fun night for everyone involved! Many thanks to the Mavericks and the team at the Events Center for making this a night to remember!

The Clubs benefited at the 9th Annual We Care holiday event on December 10 at the Thornberry Unit. Each year, furniture manufacturer Herman Miller Inc. and a number of leading interior design firms combine their talents to benefit our Club youth. Participating organizations designed unique crafts for the nearly 500 Club youth who attended to make during the event, which they can now use as holiday gifts for their families and friends. The youth also enjoyed entertainment, a cookie decorating table and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus.

Club youth from our sites in Independence recently provided a happy homecoming for a local soldier who was wounded at Fort Hood. The Club youth made Get Well cards for Keara Bono as part of their Veteran's Day activities in November. Instead of sending the cards, they were hand delivered to Keara upon her Thanksgiving Day homecoming. Our Club kids are certainly making a difference by giving back to their community!

Many thanks to Eastern Jackson County Advisory Board member Fred Mills for sending in a special Editorial/Opinion article about the Clubs' recent 2009 Multicultural Holiday Event. We appreciate Fred's continued leadership and dedication to our Club youth. Click here to check out his editorial online.

Help Your Favorite Charity! - Ongoing
Recent economic times have been hard on non-profits across the country and the Boys & Girls Clubs are no exception. But there is a way you can help! Last year, Congress extended through 2009 the charitable IRA rollover provision, which allows those ages 70 1/2 or older to make tax-free distributions of up to $100,000 direct from an IRA to a qualified charity like the Clubs. Businesses can help the Clubs as well by taking advantage of the newly enhanced deductions for donations of qualified food, books, and computer equipment. For more information on how you can help the Clubs, check with your tax advisor.
