This Week at the Clubs November 23-29, 2009 |
|
|
|
| Greetings! |
|
In an effort to keep you more informed on what's happening at the Clubs, we will send out out this weekly e-newsletter with the latest and greatest Club events and activities! |
| What's Been Going On? |

Congratulations to Kansas City Royals star pitcher and RBI supporter Zack Greinke for winning the American League Cy Young Award for 2009.
You still have one week left ( until November 30) to check out a special online auction benefiting the Clubs - Zack has donated his game-worn Royals jersey from the 2009 Jackie Robinson Day to be auctioned off on Royals.com to benefit RBI (see photo at left). He even had ALL of his teammates sign the jersey as well! Check out the link below and bid - feel free to pass it along to other baseball fans!
The flag football championship games were played on November 18th and 19th (inside in the large gym at the Thornberry Unit due to some non-natural-turf-friendly weather). In the 10-12-year-old age group, the #2 seed East Side Eagles took on the #1 seed Thornberry Bulldogs and pulled off the upset win. In the 7-9-year-old age group, the #1 seed WyCo Panthers defeated the #2 seed Thornberry Bulldogs to end their season with a perfect record. Congratulations to all of our flag football teams for a great competitive season!
Club youth from all sites came together to celebrate the holidays as well as cultures from around the world at the Multi-Cultural Holiday Event held on November 20. The youth worked very hard to hone their talents and prepare for this special evening at the Truman Memorial Building in Independence, MO. It was a night filled with all kinds of great performances! Congratulations to all of our talented Club youth who participated in this annual event.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City hosted its first ever USA Weightlifting sanctioned meet on November 17. Held in Thornberry's big gym, this event also served as an attempt for two of our local Club athletes to qualify for a senior level national meet! Look for more information on those results in the next issue of "This Week".
Recently, a group of young ladies from the Clubs had the opportunity to attend the Miley Cyrus concert at the Sprint Center. The girls had a great time cheering on their favorite star (see photos at top and below), AND they even got to go backstage and meet her! What an exciting night!
Don't forget to use GoodSearch.com for your online searches and GoodShop.com for your online shopping to benefit the Clubs. Just enter "Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City" as the charity you want to support! |

Giving Thanks Dinner - November 24
The East Side Unit is hosting their "Giving Thanks" dinner in collaboration with Club partner General Mills on November 24. In addition to the dinner, the Club will raffle off a wonderful turkey basket filled with all of the Thanksgiving trimmings. If you would like to attend the Giving Thanks dinner, please contact Monica at the East Side Unit at (816) 241-5252.
Dinner On Ice - December 2
You still have time to buy your tickets and join us for the first annual Dinner On Ice benefitting the over 6,000 youth served by the Boys & Girls Clubs. It promises to be a special evening featuring dinner on the floor of the brand new Independence Events Center arena AND served by the Missouri Mavericks players and coaching staff! Join us for a dynamic and unique evening on ice, but, more importantly, help the Clubs ensure quality and safe programs for youth in Greater Kansas City when they are not in school.
The event starts a 7:00 p.m. with a special VIP reception at 6:00 including a player meet-and-greet. Tickets start at only $75, with VIP tickets $100 and a table of 8 for $750. Click here to buy your tickets today!
The Clubs are looking forward to the upcoming 9th Annual We Care holiday event on December 10. Each year, local architectural firms and furniture dealers combine their talents to benefit our Club youth. Participating organizations design unique crafts for the nearly 500 Club youth who attend to make during the event, which they can then use as holiday gifts for their families and friends. Also, the youth will enjoy entertainment, a cookie decorating table and, of course, a visit from Santa Claus.
Help Your Favorite Charity! - Ongoing
Recent economic times have been hard on non-profits across the country and the Boys & Girls Clubs are no exception. But there is a way you can help! Last year, Congress extended through 2009 the charitable IRA rollover provision, which allows those ages 70 1/2 or older to make tax-free distributions of up to $100,000 direct from an IRA to a qualified charity like the Clubs. Businesses can help the Clubs as well by taking advantage of the newly enhanced deductions for donations of qualified food, books, and computer equipment. For more information on how you can help the Clubs, check with your tax advisor.
Leahy Chiropractic Discover Wellness Month - Month of November
Do you have family or friends who could benefit from chiropractic care? You have one week left to take advantage of this special offer from Leahy Chiropractic. As part of an annual community service project, they are offering a special promotion for evaluations throughout the month of November that will benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs. Individuals can be evaluated for a $25 donation or entire families can be evaluated for a $50 donation. The offer is good for initial consultation, examination and x-rays as needed. Only cash or checks will be accepted and all proceeds will go to the Clubs! Leahy wants your family to stay healthy, naturally! Call (913) 341-2800 for more information.
