This Week at the Clubs

Greetings!

In an effort to keep you more informed on what's happening at the Clubs, we will send out out this weekly e-newsletter with the latest and greatest Club events and activities!
What's Been Going On?

Greinke jersey
Kansas City Royals star pitcher Zack Greinke was recently named the A.L. Outstanding Pitcher of the Year by the MLB Players Association. The Clubs are thrilled to report that Zack has opted to donate his entire cash prize for the award to the Clubs and our RBI program!

In addition, now through the end of November, check out a special online auction benefiting the Clubs - Zack has donated his game-worn Royals jersey from the 2009 Jackie Robinson Day to be auctioned off on Royals.com to benefit RBI (see photo at left). He even had ALL of his teammates sign the jersey as well! Check out the link below and bid - feel free to pass it along to other baseball fans!

The East Side Unit really got in the Halloween spirit last week thanks to some General Mills volunteers. Everyone had a blast painting and decorating pumpkins (see photos at top and bottom right). The kids got to take their pumpkins home, along with some Halloween candy goody bags. Thanks to General Mills for continually providing such fun opportunities for our youth!

The Clubs have had a great NFL Flag Football season in both the 7-9 and 10-12-year-old divisions. In the 10-12-year age division, the Thornberry Bulldogs end the regular season undefeated at #1, with the East Side Eagles at #2, WyCo Panthers at #3, and the Leslie Lions at #4. In the 7-9-year age group, two teams end the regular season undefeated - the WyCo Panthers at #1, and the Thornberry Bulldogs at #2. They are followed by the Leslie Lions at #3 and the Hawthorne Hawks at #4.  See below in "What's Coming Up" for more information about the upcoming playoffs.

The Clubs held a track and field clinic on October 31 at Central High School's indoor track. The Muna Lee Foundation sponsored the event and brought in several Olympians for the interactive clinic.

The Wyandotte County Unit recently hosted a week-long Open House at the Club inviting local families to check out the Club and its programs. At the close of the week, the Keystone Club hosted an "October Feast" with foods from around the world. The event also included games and activity stations where members received goodies from special sponsor Toyota!

Help Your Favorite Charity! - Ongoing
Recent economic times have been hard on non-profits across the country and the Boys & Girls Clubs are no exception. But there is a way you can help! Last year, Congress extended through 2009 the charitable IRA rollover provision, which allows those ages 70 1/2 or older to make tax-free distributions of up to $100,000 direct from an IRA to a qualified charity like the Clubs. Businesses can help the Clubs as well by taking advantage of the newly enhanced deductions for donations of qualified food, books, and computer equipment. For more information on how you can help the Clubs, check with your tax advisor.
