The Clubs teamed up with the Kansas City Zoo to hold Boys & Girls Clubs Day for Kids at the Zoo this year on Saturday, September 19. Club members received FREE admission to the Zoo with a special discount for their parents. The Clubs had an information booth set up to encourage new member registration and invited other community agencies to set up booths to promote their services to guests at the Zoo as well. A highlight of the day was the Day for Kids program on the KC Zoo LIVE stage, where Youth of the Year Mikheala Hill read a Mayoral Proclamation, our friends from Allstate made a special check presentation (see photo at top and left) and teen Brittany Robinson led Club kids, staff and guests in reciting the Day for Kids pledge to officially commemorate the day. It was a beautiful day at the Zoo and a fun way to celebrate our Club kids!

 

On Saturday, September 19, thirteen members of the Thornberry and Wyandotte County Units traveled to Salina, KS for the Kansas State Championship Weightlifting Meet. Freddie B. placed first (lifting more than his body weight over his head) as did Jaslyn M. All of our members performed well and eleven youth qualified for the School-Age Nationals, which will be held next June in Foster City, CA. Everyone came home with a trophy or medal and all had a great time!

Last chance to catch the Traveling Fine Arts and Photography Exhibits at the Mid-Continent Library (Independence branch - 24 Highway). The display will run through the end of September. In other arts news, members look forward to auditions for this year's upcoming Multi-Cultural Holiday Event.
