This Week at the Clubs
August 31-Sept. 6, 2009
Greetings!

In an effort to keep you more informed on what's happening at the Clubs, we will send out out this weekly e-newsletter with the latest and greatest Club events and activities!
What's Been Going On?

Youth of the Month
Nearly 375 Club members, ages 6-14, received instruction in science, along with our traditional Youth Development activities, during the 2009 nine-week summer program led by certified teachers from the Kansas City and Independence School Districts. One half of each day was dedicated to science curriculum, and the program culminated with science fairs to exhibit and display members' work (see photo at top). Congratulations to all of our budding scientists who displayed at the science fairs!

The RBI Program held their 2009 RBI Awards Picnic on August 29 from 1-6 p.m. at Clark Ketterman Fields. In addition to the awards ceremony for RBI participants, coaches and sponsors, there was a BBQ and fun activities for the whole family, including face painting, tug-of-war, kickball, horse shoes, 3-legged races, and more!

Visual and performing arts have been thriving in the Clubs this summer. The Traveling Fine Arts Exhibit and Photography have been displayed all over KC this summer, including a National Fine Arts small exhibit for two weeks at KU Medical Center in June and a current exhibition through September at the Mid-Continent Library (Independence branch). In other arts news, youth have taken field trips to hear the KC Chamber Orchestra, take pictures in Loose Park and tour the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

The Wyandotte County Unit teens are participating in teen outreach to bring more members to the Club for the start of the school year. Keystone and Torch Club members even hosted a recent 'get to know us' night at the Club with karaoke, video games and a live DJ.

Leslie Unit members recently had to think fast and remember their geography when they competed with each other in a geography trivia contest. Teens answered trivia questions about state capitals and countries around the world. Most of them knew the state capitals in the U.S., but when faced with other countries, sometimes had to revisit the map! This contest helped them learn locations, towns and capitals all over the world.

Ten to twelve Torch Club members at the East Side Unit have been participating in a weekly "Keep it Clean" community service project. The members are helping keep the grassy areas, sidewalks and curbs around the Unit free of litter and debris. Great work by these young leaders!

Ten Club members from the Thornberry Unit recently traveled to two local nursing homes to spread cheer to the residents. They performed in a talent show complete with dance routines, poetry and singing. After the shows, the members talked to the residents and everyone took pictures and gave hugs all around. The youth really enjoyed their time with the residents and made some new friends!
