| Greetings! |
|
In an effort to keep you more informed on what's happening at the Clubs, we will send out out this weekly e-newsletter with the latest and greatest Club events and activities! |
| What's Been Going On? |
On May 27, the East Side Unit hosted a Career Day for Club members, parents and the surrounding community. Attendees received information on many potential career paths, listened to a guest speaker and enjoyed hot dogs, door prizes and even free haircuts!
The 5th Annual Base Ball event benefiting RBI was held at the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and American Jazz Museum on May 29. A crowd of nearly 500 danced to the grooves of Bake & The Tenderhearts, enjoyed food catered by Cosentino's Downtown Market, hit some balls in the batting cage, bid on fabulous auction items and generally had a great time! Nearly $250,000 was raised for the RBI program. Thank you to the Museums for being such gracious hosts. And a special thank you to Sonya and Jim Nutter, Jr. for hosting a fabulous Base Ball Patron Party at their lovely home for 75 guests two days prior to the event.
The Clubs held its 1st Annual Track & Field Day at Southeast High School on May 30. Events included 100m, 400m and 800m dashes, long jump, high jump, softball throw and shot put, broken down into age groups. The kids had a great time and enjoyed the day. Youth from the Leslie & Hawthorne Units posed for a quick photo (at top of this newsletter) before running a relay race at the event.
The East Side Unit hosted their 3rd Annual "End of the School Year Carnival" on May 30. Some of the attractions enjoyed by youth and their families included Mega Adrenaline Rush, water tag, carnival games with prizes, cotton candy and popcorn. The first 200 participants received a free "Atomic Blast Pack" with hot dog, chips and soda. Youth and adults alike enjoyed this fun-filled afternoon.

G.I.R.L. Program
G.I.R.L. stands for Gaining Intellect, Respect and Leadership and the objective of the program is for young ladies to gain a better understanding of self and learn life skills through the eyes of professional female mentors. June 3 marked the date for the 1st Annual G.I.R.L. (aka Girlfriends) Luncheon where 15 mentors who are working professionals in Kansas City and 12 Club members came together to share and learn (see picture at right). The group will meet once a month and enjoy various activities including attending an Alvin Ailey performance, shadowing professionals at work, and other networking. Look for more exciting updates on this program in future issues of This Week at the Clubs.
