In an effort to keep you more informed on what's happening at the Clubs, we will send out out this weekly e-newsletter with the latest and greatest Club events and activities! |
| What's Been Going On? |

The Clubs benefited from the first JCPenney Afterschool Round-Up of the year, which ran from April 10-19. Shoppers had the opportunity to round up their purchase to the next whole dollar and the JCPenney Afterschool Fund would donate the difference to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City! JCPenney is committed to providing children in our community with access to life-enriching afterschool programs and we thank them for their commitment to the Clubs!
The Wyandotte County Unit hosted the 2nd Annual SMART Girls Conference, April 17-18. Entitled "You Can't Block My Flow", the conference consisted of workshops designed specifically for young women, ages 12-18, with topics including Self-Esteem, Healthy Relationships, Etiquette, Self-Defense, Nutrition, Diversity/Teambuilding, College, and many more! 62 young ladies attended the conference, planting seeds for the future. The Clubs look to plan an even bigger and better event for 2010!
The RBI program held an equipment giveaway for its 2009 registered players on April 18. Through generous donations, the program was able to give away gloves, shoes, shirts, water bottles, and more! In addition, as RBI gears up for another exciting season, they would like to once again recognize four long-standing program partners who help bring the program to life in various ways each season:
- Kansas City Royals
- KCMO Parks & Recreation
- Negro Leagues Baseball Museum
- Hot 103 JAMZ!
We thank them for their commitment to RBI!
The Wyandotte County Unit is now playing flag rugby! The youth, led by Sports, Fitness & Recreation Program Coordinator Danny Capps, are participating in the Saints Rugby Flag League. The league is led by Tim Kluempers, head coach of St. Thomas Aquinas Rugby and president of the Kansas City Blues Rugby Football Club. Games are being played at Mid-America Sports Complex off of I-435 and Johnson Drive. Contact Danny at (913) 621-3260 for more information on when to catch a game!
Don't forget to use GoodSearch.com for your online searches and GoodShop.com for your online shopping to benefit the Clubs. Just enter "Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City" as the charity you want to support!

Earth Day Celebration - April 22
All five of the Boys & Girls Clubs Units celebrate Earth Day on April 22 in a special way this year, thanks to our Club friends at Magic Touch Cleaning. Each Unit is planting trees and decorating special rain barrels provided by Magic Touch so they can begin recycling rain water and help better the environment. The rain water collected will be used to water the new trees throughout the year. Special thanks to Gary Walker (aka the "King of Green") and his wife Trish, for helping the Clubs in our effort to Go Green!
WyCo Keystone Talent Show Auditions - April 24
The Wyandotte County Unit Keystone Club will be hosting their annual Talent Show at the Kansas City Kansas Community College on May 22, 2009. Auditions for the show will be held on Friday, April 24 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Wyandotte County Unit. Interested auditioners should call (913) 621-3260 for an appointment.
RBI Spring Training Day/Pitch, Hit & Run - April 25
On Saturday, April 25, the RBI program will hold its annual Spring Training Day, along with the Pitch, Hit & Run competition. Pitch, Hit & Run is a skills competition for boys and girls, ages 7-14. The local winners will have a chance to compete at sectionals, and those champions will continue competing up to the national level. The National Finals will be held in St. Louis during the MLB All-Star Week this summer! Good luck to all competitors!
