SIGHTLINES MAY 2012

Thank you for your continued support! By supporting the Foundation in our mission to restore and preserve sight, you rescue thousands from a lifetime of blindness.

Lions Sight WeekMissouri Lions Clubs to Help Save Sight During Lions Sight Week, May 6-12

The sight of thousands of Missourians has been saved thanks to the work of the Missouri Lions Eye Research Foundation and the Lions Clubs of Missouri. From May 6-12, the Foundation will celebrate Lions Sight Week (LSW), a week-long observance to honor the Lions' support of blindness prevention programs, encourage volunteerism, and break new records in community service. In fact, the Foundation and Lions volunteers are poised to screen more than 2,000 kids for vision problems during LSW.

Read more about LSW on our site or visit our calendar to find a LSW event in your community.

A Pledge From the Heart and Peace for a Donor Family

Cornea donorWhen Chris of Jefferson City signed the back of his driver’s license, pledging to be an organ donor, he wasn’t sure donation would be possible if something happened to him because he had diabetes. Yet, according to his sister, Cheryl, his compassion for others led him to make the pledge – just in case.

In July 2011, while recovering from a stroke he suffered months earlier, Chris passed away from a sudden hemorrhage. In the shock following his death, Cheryl was reminded about Chris’ license and asked if she would consent to donation. She didn’t have to think twice...

Showing Support for National Donate Life Month

Donate Life MonthDuring National Donate Life Month this April, Heartland Lions Eye Banks and our partners in donation honored the gifts of donor families and the lives they saved with special events throughout the month.  We co-hosted a variety of Celebration of Life events and donor registry drives at hospitals in our service area, joined Donate Life Missouri for Donor Day at the State Capitol on April 17, and coordinated a Linking Hands for Life event at the Capitol to honor donor families.

In addition, Eye Bank employees wore Donate Life America’s colors for National Blue and Green Day on April 20. The Eye Bank also coordinated a virtual fashion show with local bloggers and hosted a Blue and Green booth at the Missouri Lions State Convention.

Thanks to everyone who showed their support of donation this April!

Facebook Partners with Donate Life America to Save Lives

Facebook and Donate Life AmericaDonate Life America (DLA), the national organization dedicated to increasing the number of registered organ, eye and tissue donors that save and heal lives, today announced a major initiative with Facebook.

Facebook launched an upgrade to its timeline structure, which asks users to check their organ donor status and directs them to DLA's National Registration Page, allowing them to designate a donation decision if they have not done so already.

To add the tool, go to Timeline, click on “Life Event,” select “Health and Wellness,” choose “Organ Donor.” And make sure to click on the “Officially Register” link to make your decision to be a donor official by registering in your state. It’s that easy!

For more details on the Facebook/DLA partnership, watch Mark Zuckerberg's interview with Good Morning America.
