Sight Saved in Haiti Thanks to an HLEB Partner in Sight

Gratis Corneal TissueIn a developing country like Haiti, vision loss can be a devastating blow to an individual’s ability to work and support one’s self, not to mention his or her entire family. Glaucoma, cataracts, corneal blindness – disorders that can be treated here in the U.S. – can sink a poor family into complete and desperate poverty. In Haiti, blindness can be lethal.

Yet, in the midst of this darkness, lies hope for thousands thanks to nonprofit organizations and mission groups as well as the dedicated volunteers who support them. Volunteers like our partner in sight, Dr. Andrew Moyes of Moyes Eye Care in Kansas City, Mo., who has performed sight-saving surgeries on nine mission trips to Haiti, including corneal transplants using gratis donated tissue provided by the Eye Bank.

A Surprising Diagnosis After Scheduling a Screening

Glaucoma DetectionWhen Ginny scheduled a Healthy Vision Screening event with the Foundation at the Bonne Terre Senior Center this past spring, she never guessed that she would be the one to benefit the most. As the center’s assistant administrator, Ginny thought it would be a great service to the seniors that she works with at the center.

The Foundation’s vision screening technician encouraged Ginny to participate in a free glaucoma screening at the event. Ginny was surprised to find that she had high pressure readings in both eyes.

Mission Group Distributes 2,200 Eyeglasses in Mexico

Eyeglass RecyclingBecause of the volunteerism of the Missouri Lions, more than 60,000 donated eyeglasses are collected and delivered to our Columbia, Mo. headquarters each year. From there, we organize and distribute recycled glasses to a variety of nonprofit organizations, churches and medical mission groups.

Recently, the Foundation provided 5,000 eyeglasses to Concord Baptist Church in Jefferson City, which offered dental and medical screenings to residents of Aguascalientes, Mexico. During their trip, Concord Baptist volunteers offered health check-ups to 3,300 individuals and distributed 2,200 pairs of eyeglasses. Watch the inspiring video!
