September 2011 Update
Mucho turmoil this month here with BECA Nicaragua.
But I feel it's good turmoil.
Our new Coordinators in the cities of Matagalpa and in Estelí both quit. Yep, they packed their bags. And how on earth could that be a good thing?
Bear with me for a second. To fuel our expansion this year we decided to hire a certain profile of person; specifically, young, university-educated professional Nicaraguans.
It hasn't worked out and it all boils down to passion and commitment for the organization. Their future aspirations lay elsewhere. And with time it became very obvious.
No problem. I can't and I don't blame them one bit. I accept 100% responsibility for this bad planning decision.
It means a little more work right now for myself and my right-hand man, Antonio Rodriguez, but we can handle it.
So what now? What is the answer to this human resources conundrum? Well, my brother-in-law Elmar was first to suggest something to me many months ago.
"Why don't you hire from your own graduates?"
Bingo. It makes sense on so many levels.
Thanks, Elmar. (And all the others who suggested something similiar. There are quite a few of you.)
I'll keep you posted on how it works out.
Thanks again for believing in what we are doing here in Nicaragua.
Sincerely, Walter Hunchak Founder, BECA.org
